Poor Liz, I sympathize. I also lost about 1/2 my head hair as well as most of my pubic hair and 1/2 my eyebrows during the 5 years I went to a (female !) Endo who told me I was " just getting older" and (because I had a lot of long curly hair) that most women would "kill for hair like" mine. The hair loss, as well as the 34 lbs. of full body cellulite I gained while left unmedicated, really affected my self-esteem and sexuality. That doctor refused to believe I had hypo because of my "normal " 1.4 TSH. Not normal for me.
My hair started to grow back when I went on a combination of T3 and T4. It took about 1 1 /2 years for it to fill in, although it isn't as thick as it was before I suspected I had a thyroid problem and I doubt it ever will be. I have to accept that I now AM older and going grey, so change is inevitable. The texture is much finer, but it's thicker, doesn't look bald along the part line, and has started to curl again. It's good enough that I no longer feel like a freak and have started to get random compliments from the public when I'm out doing my life. And I have pubic hair and ecomplete eyebrows, woohoo !
I take Evening Primrose Oil, Biotin, and MSM specifically for hair support, although it's good for thyroid support as well. My Vit D was waaaay below normal, so I take 1000 units a day now too and feel that these helped strengthen my hair, since I added them about a year after I started thyroid meds and noticed a difference after about 3 months. The hair that falls out in the shower seems normal, as opposed to the golf-ball sized hunks I used to retrieve from the drain.
I'm still having trouble with the balancing act of T4/T3....still adjusting the dosages according to symptoms. But hair loss is no longer one of them. Good luck, Liz. Hope this helps. Hang in there.
Correction....I take 50,000 iu every other week.
Yeah, I take prescription Vitamin D. I take 10,000 iu once every other week. I've been on that for 3 years now and my Vit. D is in the mid normal range.
Liz?
Are you taking Vit D-3 yet?
The estrodiol "could" mean the estrogen dominacne could be present along with the testosterone being elevated...
I think you need better tests and someone in Intergrative Med to run these correctly and view them correctlyu before things get more out of whack.
I had some blood work by my gyno in June. I'm looking at the report and it just says:
FSH 54.8 which puts me in the postmenopausal catagory range of 23.0-116.3
ESTRADIOL 50
She put a note on the bottom of it that says "FSH consistent with menopause but the Estradiol not very low yet."
I don't see anything about testosterone on here.
I want my hair and I want it now.
Hey Liz,,,
Did ANYONE run the testosterone-progesterone - estrodiol tests?
Im also going through hair loss. I counted all the hairs I lost in a day and it was just over 100 hairs in and after the shower! Im getting worried cause my hair is fine to start with. My pubic hair is also very different, nearly blonde, dry and breaks..weird. My TSH is 6.3 (0.5-4.5)
FT4 is 16 (10-20)
FT3 is 4.2 (3.5-6.0) Could it be my FT3?
Save your money and return the hair vitamins. I expect that when you get the results of your thyroid tests and reference ranges, we'll have a clue as to the real cause.
I don't have the latest ones. I requested them but they aren't here yet. I'm gonna call again. In the meantime I bought another hair vitamin. I should take out stock.
Please post your thyroid test results and reference ranges.
