I have had several storms over the years and just had an angina attack that resulted in an angiosplasty and installation of stents to unblock an artery. I know the pain you felt as I have felt it many times. If you feel any of the symptoms coming on, the best thing to do of course is to get immediate help. The whole time until then, you have to remain calm. Keep telling yourself to relax and be calm. Keep taking deep breaths to calm yourself. Relax your shoulders as much as you can as the neck and shoulders tense up when in distress. If you can relax and force yourself to remain as calm as possible, it will definately help. I know it is hard but you have to make yourself do it and take charge of your body. You can even try to imagine forcing your heartrate to slow down. This type of visualtization has been proven to help create a calmness that can help in may types of painful situations. Hope all is well and Good Luck!

I went through a thyroid storm in Oct 07 last year. It was HORRIBLE. I would highly recommend taking the ativan with your beta blocker. Be glad your dr. gave it to you. I was so stressed after and my heart was still going crazy that I had to take the anti-anxiety meds they gave me. Make sure you get tons of rest and relax as much as you can. To answer your question the ativan is an anti-anxiety drug and it will help you relax. It will calm you and you really need to stay as calm as possible! Let me know if I can answer anything else for you because it was a really hard time for me. Did they put you on tapazale? Just curious.

Welcome to the patient community. Do try, though, to post to Dr. Lupo .. his forum is on the right hand side under related expert forums.
There are other members who have gone thru what you went through. I am so sorry this happened and, yes, it can be life threatening from what I understand.
