Thyroid, Estrogen and Weight Gain, oh my!

Hi All,
My dr. has recently told me that I am not prducing very much estrogen and recommended I go on bcpill...She said that it could possible effect my thyroid levels but I should even out after a month of two.  Anyone here know anything about this or have personal experience with estrogen and the thyroid??  Also, how much weight gain is to be expected from hypothyroidism?? I asked my dr. and she told me not to worry, LOL!  But I know that sometimes the pill can also add weight and being hypo I have also gained some weight so I'm just wondering.  Thanks for any input to my question (for further background pls check my profile page.)

I have low estrogen and have all my life and I am not overweight.
The only time I was overweight was when I was hypo and on antithyroid meds for hyperthyoidism(overactive thyroid).
I think get your labs done as lack of estrogen to my knowledge does not cause weight gain.
I would be more inclined to say you may be hypo.

Hi,
I was a gymfreak and suddenly gained 60 lbs in 5 months for no reason. The dr kept blaming it on eating fat stuff because my colestoral levels were high. But I was dieting and exercising! Then finially I got joint pain and went to a neurologist that then at last took a thyroid test and I was hypo. Every endio told me you lose weight when on thyroid replacement meds. My friend has. I however have to work at it hard! But it was possible for me. The joint pain I have is sjoergrens syndrome that sometimes goes hand in hand with hypo. If you also have dry mouth and dry eyes and perhaps jointpain you should get tested fir sjoergrens also. If I would have been diagnosed earlier I might have been able to prevent the jointpain. But the numerous quacks I have seen never tested me. I had to ask for the test myself it took over 1 year for them to fugure it out. I hope you will feel better soon and good luck,
Sonja
