Thyroid Scar

I just had a hemi-thyroidectomy last week and after analysis, they found that it was cancerous so I must no go in for a "completion."  Does anyone know if they will go back in via the same incision or if this will require a new incision above or below the original? I'm wondering if I will wind up with one scar or two.

Also, about how long should I wait before applying a scar cream to my neck to minimize the mark?  Anyone have any good creams which they've seen great success with?

Thanks!

I tend to scar and would like to prevent it through being diligent from the very beginning. Thank you for the insight. :)

I had the same, my scar is barely visible. They went in through the same scar twice.  I also had steri-strips.  The most important thing is to keep it clean and use sunscreen for a year.  I did use scar cream for a while, but keeping it out of the sun seemed to be better than the scar cream.

I started once I got the all clear from the doc about 3 weeks post op...and used it probably for about 3-4 months.  Now, I only put it on occassionally (might use it once a week if that!) as I don't think it really needs it anymore because it looks fine.

How long did you use the oils our scar? I am only 9 days out and still waiting for the steri-strips to fall off.

I had half my thyroid removed 10 months ago, i started using vit E and almond oil 3 weeks post op and today my scar is barely visible at all.

Good luck!

They will use the same scar. I had the two surgeries and my scar is the same one. It is now a bit wider than the original one but not too bad.
There aren't really specific creams to use, but most of us use a natural oil based one like almond oil or similar.
Use any oils or Vit E cream around 2 weeks after surgery and not before you have any stitches out. Not everyone has stitches. Depends on the surgeon.

Good luck with it!
