Thyroid problems

gained a lot of weight due to thyroid disease.
I have 2 sisters with hypothyroidism and one with hyperthyroidism. she gotten graves disease . she is starting to gain weight . she had this for over 10 years now. she went through the radioactive iodine and it did not work. she did not want the thyroid removed because of the singing she enjoys. what can she do to loose weight.will the graves disease get worse? it is starting to effect her eyes some. she does not have insurance so I don't even know if she is buying her meds. my other two sisters have hypothyroidism they both had their thyroid removed. they both take medication. now I am Bipolar and I take lithium and for a lot of years .I been told I can have thyroid problems because of it. I have had it checked every year until 2 years ago when we started having money problems and was forced to file bankruptcy. I take all my meds.
but I am truly afraid of having thyroid problems  .
how can I avoid it and what all can my sisters do to keep their weight down ?

thank you so much Barb for the information you had gave. it is very helpful and interesting . now my one sister decided to join this forum.we are here to help one another the best we can.  yes I have my thyroid checked. I haven't been able to because of money issues the past 2 years. I have heard you can have a thyroid problem and not show up.  I will be sure to get all those tests taken once I receive insurance.as long as I have had Bipolar and taken Lithium and the fact three of my sisters has problems due to thyroid makes me wonder even more . I really don't think the Dr.ever ordered all the tests .not sure. next month I have to see my psychiatrist and I will see if he will have the test ordered sense I have to have my Lithium levels tested anyway.that way I will not have to pay for a second doctor.

The 2 sisters who already have hypothyroidism need to have their levels of Free T3 and Free T4 tested, as it sounds as though they might need dosage adjustments.  FT3 controls metabolism and if it's not high enough, they will will have a hard time lowing weight.  Why did they both have their thyroids removed?

The sister who is hyper may need to opt for thyroid removal, particularly since it's beginning to affect her eyes.  Having the surgery done should not affect her voice, long term.  Weight gain is most often associated with being hypo, not hyper.  Are you sure the RAI didn't work and she's not now hypo?

Symptoms of Bi-polar can be caused by hypothyroidism. You need to have TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 tested.  You should also get tested for thyroid antibodies: Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TGab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab) for Hashimoto's and Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI) for Graves.

There's really nothing you can do to avoid thyroid problems.  They often run in families; just make sure to get tested at regular intervals and don't let anyone go just by TSH, because if your Free T3 and Free T4 levels are too low (even if in range), you won't feel well, even if your TSH is "normal".

Adequate exercise and a healthy diet is essential for keeping weight under control, and it's still difficult for some of us to lose weight we've gained.  Takes a lot of hard work and determination.
