Thyroid querry by Anand Garg

I have gone through by-pass surgery on 10th June, 2011. I am quite well now. I am taking CLOPIVAS AP 150 OD; LOSARTAN 50 mg OD, LIPVAS 20 mg. About 20 days ago I have done my blood test like lipid profile, LFT, KFT, Thyoride test etc. All the test are ok except thyoride . The range of thyride test is T3 93; T4 8.5; TSH 7.56. One doctor suggested me to take 100 micro mg tablet and another doctor told me to take 25 micro mg medicine. What shall I do?

Unfortunately, the T3 and T4 for total are considered obsolete and of little value, because of those hormones, a portion will be bound by protein and will be unusable.  That's why we need the Free's, because those show what's actually available for conversion (FT4) or use by the cells (FT3).

That said, both your T4 is pretty much mid range, but again, we don't know how much is actually free.

Your T3 is very low in its range, so it's safe to think that your free T3 would be even lower.  T3 is that actual hormone, used by the individual cells, and Free T3 correlates best with symptoms.

Have you started taking the levothyroxine?  You could split the pills in 1/2 for a couple of weeks to see how your body will react to the med.

We need to know the reference ranges of the T3 and T4 tests.  Ranges vary lab to lab, so must come from your own lab report.  We also need to know if the tests are Free T3 and Free T4 or if they are Totals, which aren't the same.

100 mcg - is that levothyroxine? - is a large dose to start with. It's customary to start with a small dosage for a few weeks, then retest and work up slowly, as needed.
