Ultrasound Wroung?

About a month ago, my regular doctor found a lump on my throat and sent me in for an ultrasound  They found 2 nodules (1.4 and 2.1 cm).  My regular doctor sent me to an endocrinologist.  After reading the ultrasound report and feeling my throat, the endocrinologist suggested getting my thyroid removed, which I would be fine with.  She also scheduled a biopsy.  The biopsy was ultrasound guided and they were ready to start when they could not find the nodules on my thyroid that were originally present on the first ultrasound.  They stopped the biopsy and then told me some ridiculously contradictory statements:
- They can't find any nodules but I should still have the surgery because there is still a chance that there could be cancer in the thyroid tissue.  But the surgery would probably be elective. (huh?)
- My thyroid is a quarter of the size it should be but I have thyroiditis, which is why it is visible on my neck.  If it's a quarter of the normal size, and you aren't even supposed to see a normal sized thyroid on your neck, then how is this possible?
Now I have to wait 2 weeks until seeing the endocrinologist again to go over everything.
So how can the 2 doctors who have felt the nodules and the radiologist who first diagnosed and saw the nodules be wrong?  And yes, I have visible "knobs" on my throat right where the thyroid is.
I'm so confused.

Thank you everyone for responding.  I'm still waiting to see my endocrinologist (1 more week) but I did get a preliminary report back about no nodules.  It's really frustrating.  I know I've been told that blood tests can change sometimes with autoimmunes like Hashimoto's but as of right now I've tested negative.  In the meantime it's been about a week and a half since the non-biopsy biopsy and I'm still having problems swallowing and feeling this thing on my neck.  Either way, I think I want it out.  I guess I'll see what the doctor says next week.  Until then, I have no clue.

Hello!
  I had a lot of confusion surrounding my ultrasound as well.  I was told first nodule...then nodules...then cysts...then multi nodular goiter....then perhaps an atopic parathyroid.....finally pockets of thyroiditis.  That is the answer we are on right now.  That what I really have is Hashimotos and large pockets of thyroditis.  Maybe this is what you have.  Either way you need another opinion and another look.  It is soooooo frustrating.  Are you having symptoms?  Good luck!!

Typically, the "real" nodules look like this

In rare cases the inflammed areas can be confused with the nodules by unexperiensed technician;
You may need to have another high frequency ultrasound with Doppler color flow.
