Cyst on thyroid

Hi there,
I have a very large cyst on my thyroid.  It is pressing on my throat and causing to have some problems breathing mainly whan I lay down. I have also had sore throats and occasional choking on food.  I have been on high blood pressure med for years now.  Have currently with past 6 months have lost 42lbs.  Few weeks ago I found this cyst.  Went to the doc and my blood work for thyroid has come back normal.  I had an uptake test which showed "little hyper".  I did have the cyst drained by a surgeon about 10 days ago.  But by the next morning it felt as if swollen up again.  The surgeon sent off the fluids from cyst to pathology.  Well I met with him this past friday and he told me the pathology report showed no malignancy.  And proceed to tell me that we should wait until next flair up.  I am still suffering at times from this cyst.  And told him this so he said well we will take it out then.  Another option he said was to get on thyroid hormones and see if that helps wait 6 months.  I am very confused.  Will these pills help reduce the size of the cyst?? or do I really just need to have it removed.  When I say it he said I will have to have the complete right thyroid lobe removed.  Plz any advice would be appreciated!!!

Sherry,
This is a general surgeon.  My family doc referred me to him.  He def doesnt seem to take my concerns seriously.  Last week he didnt ask me what symptoms I was continuing to have.  Or even glance at my neck.  Just my thyroid was ck as far as I know.  Thank you so much for your opinion I really appreciate it!!

Hi, i am not sure that I can offer any good advice here, but I do have a couple of questions...Is this a GP or is it an endocronologist? Does he seem to take your concerns seriously?  My concern would obviously be that you feel it is interfering with your breathing and sometimes causing you to choke.  That seems to indicate that it is of some size.  I would not take any chances, but surgery is such a personal decision.  Did he test just your thyroid or did he check your parathyroid as well?  It is very important to see an endocronologist when dealing with any type of thyroid disease.  They have seen so many cases and there are so many variences to everyone's case.  There is alot more to the thyroid than most people (unfortunately including GP's)realize.  If you have not seen a specialist I would make that my next step and top priority.  If this doctor is a specialist and he doesn't seem to put enough weight on your concerns I would probably look into a second opinion sooner than later.  I hope this was of some help to you.  Sherry
