What causes iodine important with the effect and thyroid within the body?

A urine test showed severe iodine deficiency from the thyroid not making enough of it. What can cause this and what kind of effects does it have on the body? I feel fatigued all the time, abnormal periods, sensitivity to cold, sleeping problems, emotional disorder, digestive problems like constipation, liquid build left side abdomen with pain all the time, short-term memory issues, light headed, dizziness sometimes, slow mentally, ringing in ears. These symptoms people told me are associated with the thyroid gland. In a way I don't know if my body is digesting food right. An ultra sound and blood work showed the thyroid was alright. I had a CT of the abdomen and pelvis. The abdomen was normal. The pelvic showed a 3cm cyst on the left ovary. The lower left is where the discomfort is and radiates up the left side of the abdomen the more I eat or drink. The comfort is relieved somewhat with a bowel movement. My body cannot have a bowel movement on its own without the use of a laxative. That has been going on for several months. The fatigue has been three years. I'm a 26 year old female. I am waiting to see what my Gyn plan is for this. My new doctor six weeks ago told me in his opinion I need an ultra sound to see if the cyst resolved and that most of the cysts resolve on their own. I see my doctor this afternoon at 2:00pm. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear that you are on the right track. My appointment was good. He told me my iodine level was very low. He is treating me all natural now. I brought an iodine supplement there. My doctor said that the low iodine level is playing a role in the fatigue. He asked me if I use salt and I do. I actually use more salt on my food and dump more on there than everybody else. He told me to keep using salt. The thing is I have a well balanced diet and I do eat enough food that contains iodine. I am going to be taking this supplement for the next month and see how it works. He also told me to take Vitamin B-complex, C, D, Omega fatty acids and acidophillis. This doctor does not think it's all in my head. He said it's mostly physical. Stress and anxiety is a small part. I had a blood test four months ago of my thyroid hormones and they were normal. I need to get the lab report. I do have a copy of the pelvic and abdomen. It says 3cm by 3.13cm cyst on the left ovary. I am not hearing back from the nurse at the office of my GYN. I have an appointment in November anyway. I need an ultrasound on the pelvic to find out if the cyst resolved or still there. I'm relieved the cyst isn't to big with that size. I am getting off a beta blocker for fast heart rate, migraine and high blood pressure. I am weaning off because my blood pressure is low about 87/66. I am taking Wellbutrin, Effexor, Lunesta, Trazadone. The Wellbutrin.

Well my appointment was a bit disapointing this doc was supposed to be bioidentical friendly and he was not really and he basically made me feel as every other doctor has that I am nuts and nothing is wrong with me but this time I have an advantage with a pharmasist that refered me to go to this doctor.  The doc will work with her on bio's she does not think I am crazy so I think I am on the right track.  He did basically diagnose me with PCOS and gave me metaformin and some other scripts not sure what I will be using or not using and tested my blood for my prolactin level will find out in 3 days what the result on that is.

How was your appointment?

Your thyroid does not make iodine.  You have to get iodine from your food or supplements.  Your thyroid USES iodine (it's the only organ in the body that uses iodine) to make T3 and T4, the two main thyroid hormones.  In fact the "3" and "4" in T3 and T4 indicate the amount of iodine in each.

Ask your doctor for the actual numbers of any thyroid bloodwork you had done.  It would be best to get a printed copy of the lab report, which will also have reference ranges on it.  When you have those, post them (with their ranges) if you'd like and members can help you interpret them.  Too often we hear doctors saying "normal" when testing was inadequate or reference ranges used were obsolete.

Good luck at your appointment.

I could have wrote your post myself.  My bowel problems were relieved when I started on thyroid meds.  I also have seveare back pain one side or the other and cysts I believe it is caused by PCOS.  I  also have an appointment today let me know what you find out and I will do the same.

Make sure they test your free T3 and free T4 my TSH was only slightly elevated and the doctor was reluctant to treat me for thyroid instead wanted to give me depression meds.  My progesterone, testosterone are off as well.
