What type of hair loss normally occurs with thyroid disease?

Does it usually fall out in patches, or is it more of a general thinning?

HypoT and Vit B defencencies run hand in hand.

Hense......... hair loss and the more defecient to more loss.

A very Good Vit B6-12 is very helpful to keep your hair along with getting hypoT under control.

Any beatician will tell you Vit B is great for youthful follicals.

I keep having to move my 'part' or lack there of.  If I have a definite part it looks like I've shaved a white line down my head. It took my hair falling out for a Dr. to say, hey I think it's your thyroid. And I mean it was falling out! Now I only have to clean the shower out once, it used to be 3-5 times during a shower. My hair is everywhere. At work, in the bed, on my kids clothes, YUCK. Thankfully is has slowed down... I thought I was going to be bald. Now I wish I had that thick hair I used to complain about!

One of the first things I really noticed was that my hair was getting thin in the front so I got bangs.  Now you can see a little bald spot right in the middle of them...sort of reminds me of the back of my grandfather's head...lol...My hair is also long and very thick so lots falls out in the shower, car, and everywhere else.  Somedays I feel like a shedding golden retriever!!!

OMG!  I just realized from reading the funny by description, not funny in reality, posts that I have been having that on and off for a year - I really thought it was that "time of year" thing I have always been told it was.  I never realized before reading this that it could be my thyroid.  So, is it hyper or hypo, or both?  I am still realizing a lot of things and with that "dumber than my....well, I'll be nice and put an inate object ---- my shoe" doctor I have, I will never get to the bottom of my problems with him and will have to continue to fish for it myself.  I was reading the hair posts before, but just caught on with this description.  So, can this also make your hair stop growing?  I can grow my hair out a little, but when I do, it is brittle and will never get longer than about an inch an a half from where it is.  Thanks for the description that helped me understand all!

I would encourage those of you that are having hair loss problems to try a supplement I found at wal mart. Hair skin and nails, with biotin. I know those b vits help with hair loss.

I am not having hair loss, but I am having sleep loss, so it seems it is always something. I know everybody is tired of hearing about my sleep problems, but geez, this is ridiculous.

when you have hypothyroidism, you can count on it, there is going to be hair loss, sleep loss, peace loss, sense of sanity loss. I am sure others could add to the list.

well, in the front of my head, you can see my scalp if I wear my hair back....that is no good for me.  I have long hair, when it is wet it is down to my waist but its curly so it shrinks.  I have never had short hair and cannot imagine having to cut it.  I hope that I get this job so I can go to the doctors that I need to see or find one that is willing to jump in feet first and find out what is wrong with me.

I always wondered about those older ladies who had such thin hair that you could see their scalp through their rattled hair-dos.  Now I've become one of them...minus the ratted hairdo.

I used to have thick long hair but I've gradually cut shorter and shorter because of the friggin heat rushes.

What next?  lol

Has to be the disease because I'm not on any meds for my thyroid.  I've just tested positive for hypothyroidism but my doc wants to wait until my levels are higher before he puts me on meds.....I'm going to be freaking bald by the time I get meds!!!!!!!!!!

Phew!!!  It sounds weired to say that it is comforting to know that I'm not the only one.
Does synthyroid has that effect on us, or it is the disease itself?

May be we should that 'Hair Club' on tv commercial?  LOL.

G'Day everyone!

Okay, you made me really laugh!  I go through the same thing with my husband....all I hear is....."Jesus Liz, what's with all the freakin hair everywhere!"  Oh I'm sorry, I'll try and make it NOT come out!  I've been losing so much hair over the past year it's a wonder that I'm not totally bald right now.  Luckily I was blessed with enough hair for several people because I lose at least a bajillion a day. In the car, in the kitchen, all over the bathroom, it's everywhere.  And I have long hair so my husband freaks out on a daily basis. I think he's taken the sink apart at lease twice, LOL!

My hair was not falling out in clumps. I noticed more strands falling out when I washed and brushed my hair. Also noticed strands in the sink when I dried it, which never happened. However, it has slowed down so I am grateful for that.

My hair has started falling out also. I am on synthroid and my "levels" are normal, but it still is falling out. My dr. is sending me to a dermatologist. What is he gonna tell me I have thyroid desease, lol!
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as needing you'r thyroid to be on the high side to actually get back to nr=ormal. Does that make sense?

Wow....My hair has majorly been falling out....by the  hand fulls.  It normally falls out but not at this rate.  I cleaned my brush, brushed my hair 3 times with it and it was so full you couldn't see the bristles.  Not only that but I brush my hair before I get in the shower and it fills a brush, while I'm in the shower it falls out in my hands or sticks to the back of my legs and when I dry myself I have hair balls on me and then when I get out I comb it which the comb has a ton of hair in it then while blow drying it my hands are full of hair.  I don't know how I'm not bald.  My floors are full of my hair, my bed is full of my hair.  I've been tested at the minimum of 3 times for hypothyroidism and each time the tests come back positive but my doctor says not high enough to put me on meds.  Come on, how much more of my life am I going to lose before I have something to help me!!!!!!

yup, that's how it was - and sometimes still is - for me. I'd wash my hair and have lots of strands of hair tangled up in my fingers. So, I'd get it untangled and let it go down the drain. Then the drain would get clogged and I'd get in trouble from my hubby. He didn't care about why my hair was coming out, he was too busy being ticked off that I clogged the drain - again. I finally started rolling it in a ball when I got it off my fingers and flicking it out of the shower onto the floor - or wall - or wherever it would land. And, good grief, did I ever get in even bigger trouble if I forgot to find where the darn hairball landed after I got out of the shower and throw it out. sigh.

It doesn't happen like when patients have chemo or anything and varies by patient.

Usually you wash or brush your hair and notice the hair starting falling out.
