White spots/lines on fingernails

I have these white lines on my fingernails that run parallel to the cuticle. They have areas in the white line that are heavier and make the line look like a spot. They cover the nail in it's entirety.  I have taken zinc for year now with no real change. I am concerned about taking too much zinc since it was removed from some dental products. My hypoyroidism is controlled with medication. I do not suffer trauma to my hands. I am 55 yes old and have had these for as long as I can remember. Does anyone have an idea what causes these lines and a fix?

I have a vague recollection that zinc should be taken as part of a multi, rather than alone;  I think it may deplete copper.   I go and see a naturopath every couple of years to get a bit of a balance, and tend now, not to take any one supplement, by itself over a long period, unless it's a water soluable vitamin like B-complex.   Sorry if this is no assistance regarding the white lines...

That's a good point. While I have many of these symptoms, I had most of them start after the Air Force gave us experimental Anthrax immunizations. I have had hypothyroidism long before those shots.  I can't remember a time growing up that I did not have these line/spots on my fingernails. I am new to this site and will try to dig up my last labs. Thanks for the info.

How do you know that your hypothyroidism is controlled with medication.  Do you have any other of the following typical hypo symptoms shown in this long list?

Risk factors for hypothyroidism include:
____ I was treated for hypothyroidism in the past
____ I have a history of miscarriage
____ I am gaining weight inappropriately
____ I'm unable to lose weight with diet/exercise
____ I am constipated, sometimes severely
____ I have hypothermia/low body temperature
____ I feel fatigued, exhausted
____ Feeling run down, sluggish, lethargic
____ My hair is coarse and dry, breaking, brittle, falling out
____ My skin is coarse, dry, scaly, and thick
____ I have a hoarse or gravely voice
____ I have puffiness and swelling around the eyes and face
____ I have pains, aches in joints, hands and feet
____ I have had trouble conceiving a baby
____ I feel depressed
____ My moods change easily
____ I have difficulty concentrating
____ I'm more forgetful lately
____ My hair is falling out
____ I can't seem to remember things
____ I have no sex drive
____ I am getting more frequent infections, that last longer
____ I'm snoring more lately
____ I have/may have sleep apnea
____ I feel shortness of breath/ and tightness in the chest
____ I feel the need to yawn get oxygen
____ My eyes feel sensitive to light
____ I have strange feelings in neck or throat
____ I have tinnitus (ringing in ears)
____ I have vertigo
____ I feel some lightheadedness

If so, then maybe your hypothyroidism is not a controlled as you think.  Just having thyroid test results anywhere within the reference ranges does not mean that everything is okay.  How about posting your thyroid test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report and let members help interpret your thyroid status?
