can thyroid goitres be caused by strangulation?

j_f
I have been strangled in a situation of physical abuse, it would appear that after the event took place i developed a thyroid goitre. I have had this giotre for more than 10 years and it is currently euthyroid (normal function). I would just like to know if the strangulation could be a cause or contributing factor to my condition?

Many thanks.

the mechanical damage to thyroid with internal bleeding  will show up as semisolid blood filled cysts with necrotic areas.

Thanks for your reply. My goitre became apparent not long after it happened, about half a yr or so. Do you think it could still be caused by the strangulation? I have had the goitre for 10 yrs and i have never needed medication for any underlying thyroid diseases as my levels have been normal. Ive been looking for journal articles on the topic but have found nothing. I really apprecite any info! Thanks.

Yes, it can. Severe whiplash can cause it too. That is not to say though, the goitre did not appear due to other reasons. Usually any injury to the thyroid will become apparent quite quickly, usually within months, not 10 years. I would say in your case it is due to an underlying thyroid issue and not strangulation.
