just looking for insight from others who have been there!

I am scheduled for thyroid surgery on April 26th for a solid mass and another nodule on left side. The biopsy could not rule out cancer. My brother just had surgery in March for the same thing and his was cancer. Due to the fact that I have had previous surgery on my neck(on vertebraes but through the front) they want to try to take only left side unless they find that it is cancer. I am very worried because she said there is a chance I could lose my voice or worst case..have a trach due to scar tissue. All of this is scary to me but my husband doesn't want me to wait for fear that is could be cancer...i guess I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with any of this. Thanks for your help...

G'day! Having had two surgeries for thryoid removal I think I am qualified to answer your worries.
Firstly, it is scary! that is for sure, but it really isn't quite so bad once you have been through it!

They will always tell you the worst case scenario. They have to! It rarely happens but just in case it does, you need to be forewarned. Ask the surgeon, how many cases of this type of surgery have they had with the voice damage or traech? If they tell you none, then you should have confidence, if they say 25 a year, I'd run and find another surgeon! Seriously, though, any doctor that had that many failures wouldn't be practising any longer!

I had a cancer scare the first surgery, it was a Follicular Adenoma, so non-cancer. But the 2nd side was a pre-cancer. When the biopsy originally came back with Hurthle cells, I did freak a little, but it helped me in one sense to get my act together and stop worrying about little things!
Even if it is cancer, the success rate is far beyond any other type of cancer.

Ask them about the through the armpit surgery. This is the new technique now. It is not commonly done, but you might like to ask to reduce any problems with the scarring issues from your previous surgeries.

Good luck!
