Doc wants me to stop taking thyroxine

Hi all,

I have been on 50mcg thyroxine for 4 years now for hypothyroid (the underactive one?). I was initially diagnosed when i started to lose my hair at around 21 years old, feeling constantly sluggish and tired. 4 years on I have not noticed any real change in mood/feel but my hair loss has subsided considerably, i also still find it extremely hard to lose weight even whilst being in the 'normal' ranges. My current doc is different from the one who diagnosed me initially and feels that 50mcg is such a small dose and that my original doc was sitting on the fence and mis diagnosed. He wants me to stop taking the pills for 2 months and retest to confirm his suspicions but i amconcerned my hair loss will flare up again and I will be left balder than before...
Has anyone had any experience with this specifically related to hair loss?

Many thanks

Footsy

Hair loss is a symptom of hypothyroidism.  What are your actual thyroid hormone levels?  You should be getting tested for Free T3 and Free T4, every time you have TSH.

The whole idea of taking replacement hormones is to bring your levels into the normal range.  You don't stop taking med, when they get there, or they go back out of range.  Additionally, just being "in range" isn't good enough.  You have to be a point that's good for you. Most of us feel best with FT4 about mid range and FT3 in the upper half to upper third of its range.

Please post any thyroid related tests you've had recently, so we can better assess your testing/treatment.
