pregnancy and PTU

My TSH is normal in the blood test 3 month before I found pregnant.  At 9week5days, my blood test Free T4:2.42(normal 0.89-1.76), TSH < 0.004 (not detectable), no symptoms.  At 13 weeks, Dr. started me on PTU, I took it for a few days (day1 PM only:100mg, day2 AM+PM: 200mg, day3 PM only: 50mg, day4 AM only: 50mg)  on day 4 AM, I did another blood test: free T4: 1.53 (normal), total T3:220 (60-181), normal for pregnancy woman, TSH: 0.004 (this time detectable at the minimum).

My question is: did my T4 drop because I am on PTU for just 2.5 days, or it is more likely the 4 weeks time in pregnancy made a difference even I had not taken PTU?  Am I still considered "hyper" with just TSH abnormal?  Should I stop PTU?

Hi Dogdancing,
I am new to the community and stressing about being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in my fourth pregnancy. My Endo gave me a call on Monday morning to tell me that I need to start on PTU immediately (3 50 mg tablets, 3x a day). During my initial visit I failed to tell him that I am still nursing my 3 year old 3x a day, no night time. I have not started the meds yet b/c I'm scared and still haven't rec'd a copy of my test results or heard back from my OBGYN's office. I have read through some of the discussions and see that you have been on PTU and nursing. I was just wondering if you have any info regarding being on it and nursing a 3 year old. I have been nursing non-stop for 7 1/2 years. I nurse even while in labor. My eldest stopped 2 months shy of his 4th b-day and my second stopped 2 weeks shy of his 4th b-day. Can you and others please share some advise. I just can't stand the thought of having to take meds during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, I just want to ensure the safety of my unborn and my 3 year old. Please Help!

Do not stop the PTU without consulting your doctor!!

Hyperthyroidism can cause miscarrage in the first and last trimesters, it can cause your baby to just stop growing. Its VERY important you get treatment for this.

The PTU is the safest to us during pregnancy ( I myself did to hyperT pregnancys and nursed while on PTU). However it does cross the placenta and can cause supression of the babies thyroid and casue a goiter in the fetus. (if this happens you will be c-sectioned and/or delivered early for the babies safety)

Expect LOTS of ultrasounds to monitor babies growth. You are a high risk pregnancy and should be treated as such.

I imagine you are like me....against taking medicine while pregnate. Its very important that you do so though. Pregnancy puts MASSIVE strains on your body, (cardiac imparticular) Taking the med you are preventing the ugly side effects of hyperthroidism that can leave you in poor health. Your heath is just as important as your childs.

Pregnacy can bring on a temporary whacked thyroid that will go away some time post partum....or stay around for good, so make sure you follow up post partum with checks on your levels.

Congrats on your pregnancy, So sorry your having this added stress/ worry

Peace be the journey
