If you aren't eating at sufficient intervals (or the right foods), your blood sugar can drop too low, causing hypoglycemia which can cause those episodes of fast heart rate and anxiety, plus a feeling that things are rushing by/overwhelming.
A lot of anxiety symptoms can be treated simply by getting thyroid levels to a point that's right for you. Thyroid related anxiety can be caused by "either" hypo or hyper.
Do you have recent thyroid labs you could post? Those would include TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. If so, please post the results, along with the reference ranges, since these are lab specific and must come from your own report.
In addition, what type of thyroid med are you currently on? At what dose?
I am not currently on a beta-blocker as I have a very low resting heart rate and a BB would slow it down even further. Although, it work wonders for anxiety from what hear from some of my anxious friends.
I have noticed that if you want certain testing done you have to just demand it from the physician. I don't wait for them to pick a test, I ask them...when they are creating a lab slip to add on other lab works I want done. After all I'm paying for it. If they don't comply go for a second opinion. That's what I had to do be get diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. And when neither of them listened I went to the ER and complained of SOB and chest pain, what do you know, a discovery of a nodule pushing on my airway.
As far as the hypoglycemia, I believe that I have that as well especially in the morning. I try to keep with the 6 small meals a day and that has been very helpful.
My doctor said that I have graves disease that burnt itself out. So I am hypothyroid now. I was on too much medication which made me hyperthyroid. Which was a good thing because I was able to understand that the former "panic attacks" that I used to have were really hyperthyroid. I have the anitbodies for graves disease but am now hypothyroid. It's been a really long time of having been misdiagnosed.
I am now trying to figure out what "anxiety" symptoms can be treated with medication. I currently don't have the "driving anxiety". But I am still scared that it will flare up and am really anxious sometimes.
Sometimes that stress from being in the situations that I had the "driving anxiety" just physically drains me and I feel weak and shakey.
I also noticed that I have hypoglycemia problems. Is this common?
Do either of you take beta blockers? They sound like they could be a wonderful treatment for this. But I wonder if I can with the hypoglycemia symptoms.
How would I get my adrenals tested. And what about hypoglycemia?
I really know what you are talking about when you say everything just rushes by. When one of those hyperthyroid episodes happens, it feels like everything is suddenly too much to think about and everything is coming at you top speed. And you just need to get out of there. You lose your focus.
I have that same "driving anxiety" on the highway although, it's still stressful for me to even drive on the streets. I also have anxiety being in a shopping setting with a lot of people, I start to shake, sweat, and hyperventilate. So I remedy all of that by just staying home or making someone else do it, lol. I had a hemithyroidectomy 10 days ago for a FNA that was benign, although I still have hyper symptoms which seems to be tapering off a bit.
I have high anxiety while driving on the free-way. My anxiety is not to your extreme, but even when I'm in remission (as I am now) from graves, that anxiety is still there. I'm ok with back streets, side streets, residential areas, but put me on a HWY with speed limit 60+ and a bunch of cars changing lanes, flying past etc, and you'll have a lady that just wants to hurry up and get off at the next exit, lol.
There is such a thing as "driving anxiety". I'm not sure it's specifically related to being hyperthyroid, though.
Have you ever had your adrenals tested?
it sounds just like the panic attacks I have on occasions. Fight or flight response.
