Thyroid problem

About 2 yrs. ago i started having symtoms such as fatigue, hair loss, hot flashes all the time. The Dr. found my thyroid was abnormal. He started me on synthroid and worked with it for a while til I was taking synthroid0.2mg with 0.05of Levothyroxine. He checked my levels about every 6 months. Well about a month ago he checked it and it came back abnormal. He kept me taking the same meds. I went back for my checkup about 2 weeks ago and he checked it again.  In a few days the results came in and the nurse call me and said I was taking too much medicine. She said my thyroid had dropped to 0.003, so he took me off the Levothyroxine. I have felt so bad and my hair is comin out terrible. Will it get better just taking the synthroid?

It's nearly impossible to manage a thyroid condition by testing only for TSH.  I agree that you need to have FT3 and FT4 tested in order to see what's really going on.

I also don't understand why your doctor would have you on 2 medications that are the same.  Synthroid is simply a brand name of levothyroxine; both synthroid and levo are T4 meds.

If you can get your doctor to test the FT3 and FT4, do so, then make sure you get a copy of the lab report for your records.  If your doctor refuses to do FT3 and FT4, he will keep you ill, and you should find another doctor.

Hello,

you may be one of those people whose TSH does not reflect your thyroid status.

It sounds like your doctor is only checking TSH and not any of the active thyroid hormones.

You need to ask your doctor to test Ft3 and FT4 which are the active thyroid hormones.  These should be at least middle to upper half of the reference range.  If not, you need to be back on your thyroid medications.

I don't understand why your doctor has you taking 2 medications which are essentially the same.  .2 mg of synthyroid is 200 mcg of T4 medication, .05 of levothyroxine is 50 mcg of T4 medication - giving you a total medication level of 250 mcg T4/day.

So effectively your meds have drop you from 250 mcg (Levo+Syn) to 200 mcg (syn only). This may be too big a change.

Others will post here some good links.
