It's nearly impossible to manage a thyroid condition by testing only for TSH. I agree that you need to have FT3 and FT4 tested in order to see what's really going on.
I also don't understand why your doctor would have you on 2 medications that are the same. Synthroid is simply a brand name of levothyroxine; both synthroid and levo are T4 meds.
If you can get your doctor to test the FT3 and FT4, do so, then make sure you get a copy of the lab report for your records. If your doctor refuses to do FT3 and FT4, he will keep you ill, and you should find another doctor.
Do you know if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis?
Hello,
you may be one of those people whose TSH does not reflect your thyroid status.
It sounds like your doctor is only checking TSH and not any of the active thyroid hormones.
You need to ask your doctor to test Ft3 and FT4 which are the active thyroid hormones. These should be at least middle to upper half of the reference range. If not, you need to be back on your thyroid medications.
I don't understand why your doctor has you taking 2 medications which are essentially the same. .2 mg of synthyroid is 200 mcg of T4 medication, .05 of levothyroxine is 50 mcg of T4 medication - giving you a total medication level of 250 mcg T4/day.
So effectively your meds have drop you from 250 mcg (Levo+Syn) to 200 mcg (syn only). This may be too big a change.
