I think Totie is right - it is possible for one side to do the work and what med if any, will depend on your levels after the surgery.
Tamra, I could be wrong, but I don't think compounding pharmacies do "natural" meds, I think what you get from a compounding is a combination of synthetic T4 and T3, not the porcine formulas like Armour or NaturThroid. Someone please let me know if I'm wrong on this.
Since everyone is different, it depends on the individual as to whether or not you would do best on synthetic or natural. At any rate, you won't have to worry about that until you have symptoms and they put you on med.
I don't believe it is the med that causes the weight gain for most of us, so much as the hormone imbalance (or lack of hormone). At least that was the case for me. Now that my thyroid values are coming back into line, I find that I'm able to lose weight again.
My apologies, my co worker is a SHE.
My co-worker had part of his thyroid removed, and he is not on any medication. His was removed about 15yrs ago.
It will depend on your blood work after it. You will not necessairly be given anything if your levels are within range. My co-worker did not gain any weight, still slim, but she does work out and eats right. She does not have any issues with it.
Don't get your hopes up on being given something immediately afterwards either. What I think may happen is that after your surgery your doctor will wait about six weeks to do lab work and go from there.
Honestly, it depends on the experience of the surgeon. Make sure you do your research. You want one who has done many thyroid surgeries, one who has a good chance of not damaging your parathyroid glands. (They control your calcium levels). With a TT, you will have to rely on the drugs forever, but with a partial, you should still be taking replacement T4/T3. I don't know how your doctor expects one lobe to carry the entire load. There are many brands. You have to find one that works for you. Many endos will insist on a T4 drug and nothing else, but their patients are still experiencing hypo symptoms and need that T3 like Cytomel.
Many patients on this forum use natural, not synthetic, thyroid drugs made from pig glands. Synthetic would be Levo or Synthroid (t4) and Cytomel (T3). Natural would be something from a compounding pharmacy or Armour or Nature Thyroid. You will have to do the research on that one. There is a growing debate of natural vs. synthetic.
