Carbon Dioxide

what causes your carbon dioxide levels to be high in blood work??????  My son has slightly high levels and a spot on his lung, they think it's scar tissue for the spot but what about the carbon?

Hi,

Well, i think it would be better and more convenient for you to discuss the report with your doctor or the lab and ask for the normal range of carbon - di -oxide.

Anyways, like i said there is nothing to worry about - but yes, it would help if you could post the chest xray reports and also what the chest physician or pulmonologist advises.

Let us know if you have any other doubts.

Regards.

The blood test was a Complete Metabolic Panel and I'm not sure what you want me to post.  Do you want all of the tesing (even the normal ones) or for me to scan it and copy and paste it?

Hi,

The carbon - di oxide values are usually seen in an arterial blood gas report - could you post us the report please.

The normal range of carbon-di-oxide is 30-35. So this is not high. You could get a repeat potassium levela nd see if it is persistently low.

Do post us the chest xray reports when possible and do get a pulmonologist review.

Let us know if you need any other information.

Regards.

He's just turned 7 years old so no he's not a smoker!  It was an x-ray and I'll have to get the copy of the results to post them but I know that his Carbon dioxide was slightly high and I have those numbers.Carbon Dioxide 29 (Normal should be around 24 I think)  His potasium was barely normal .1 low and his glucose was a little high but he wasn't fasting.  He had pnemonia as a baby (13 mos old) that's where they think the scar tissue is from!!

Hi,

A raised carbon -di-oxide level usually is seen in cases of respiratory diseases which are chronic such as COPD , kyphoscoliosis - the body starts to retain CO2.

What is your son's age? Is he a smoker? Has he had any respiratory disease or illness in the past? How do you know he has scar tissue on his lung? Was a chest xray or CT done?

Could you post the xray, CT and blood test reports here?

Does he have any breathlessness or any other symptoms?

It would be advisable to consult a chest physician and get a lung function testing if required and he could also be started on inhaler medications if required.

It would help if you could let us know the above details.

Post us about how he is doing and if you have any other doubts.

Regards.
