My 7 year old son, an asthmatic, just awoke with hives all around his joints. His wrists, shoulders, knees and ankles were CLEARLY swollen, and he was complianing of pain. The ONLY difference was he was JUST previously taking ZYRTEK for 5 days, an allergy medication he has seasonally taken from September through November. We are still not sure if it was an allergic reaction to the Zyrtek, but he was prescribed Prednisolone for 5 days, and Benadryl, dye free (which is what I usually give him to clear up nasal congestion.) Today is day 6 and he seems better, but now, he missed his Flu shot, so I he has also missed school wed, thurs, fri and today....I cannot take any chances being he was on the Pred. so long that he will catch "something else" going around school...ANY DR THOUGHTS ON HOW LONG TO WAIT? anyway, the Pediatrician diagnosed it as a two- named medical condition, which I was just seraching for when I found this.....I wish I could remember the name....(but NOT the more serious "johnson" something....)
Interesting, I just spent 6 hrs. in emergency ward myself with the same symptoms.
How did your husband recover? Did they give me anything other than antihistamine and anti-inflammatory? That is what they prescribed for me.
I had the same thing happen to me about 14 years ago when I was taking penicillin. I have never taken it since. This time, I'm not taking any drugs, so I don't know what it could be. I assume it is an allergic reaction to something. The hives disappeared withing 3 days, however the joint pain, which moves throughout the body, is very painful and disabling.
Hello,
Many cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by viral infections or medications.
The mainstay of treatment of hives is antihistamine which may be necessary for prolonged periods (in excess of 6 weeks). Double conventional doses of these non-sedating antihistamines such as Cetirizine, Loratadine, Acrivastine and Fexofenadine may be needed to get symptom relief. Sedating antihistamines such as Chlorphenamine or Hydroxyzine are used at night to get urticaria control. Short courses of oral cortisone or steroids are taken for short periods (one to three days) to settle more severe symptoms.
You may take Vitamin C along with the prescribed treatment. Vitamin C is a general anti-allergy supplement. It helps stabilize mast cells so they are less likely to release histamine.
If the symptoms do not improve, then diagnosis of SLE can be predicted. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system.Diagnosed by Antinuclear antibody testing and anti-extractable nuclear antigen (anti-ENA).
Pls discuss these options with your husband’s doctor.
Hope it helps.
Take care and regards.
he is a forklift driver in a factory that makes VOLVO trucks. He went back to the dr today now his foot has purple welps on it the dr says just an allergic reaction but he hasnt took any new meds or anything. I didnt think an allergic reaction hurt bad? He is in pain. They just changed the steroids. Said blood work was normal?????Help
Hi,
Hives (urticaria) and angioedema (body swelling) indicates an acute case of urticaria. The most common causes are foods like fish, nuts, latex, insect bites, medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, BP medications, codeine.
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Identifying the trigger is not an easy task. Complete medical history, skin tests and thorough examination will help in the diagnosis.
What does your husband do for a living?
