Belly fat is not uncommon, but if it`s distention of the abdominal cavity, this is irregular...do you have any pain or discomfort at any time...

There can be fluid buildup in your abdominal cavity, have you looked up your symptoms at all to see if anything comes up. Some suggestions are distended abdomen can point to diabetes, blockages in bile ducts, irritable bowel...have you had blood tests recently...have you had diabetes testing done. You mentioned you are a little overweight, perhaps that is a possibility due to lifestyle.

Definitely worth checking into further...never pays to wait until things get worse.

Really? lol ....

A person is concerned about belly-fat and you're recommending they go to the emergency room for a pregnancy test?

It's not uncommon to gain weight in your belly area.  Alot of women do and it's not always related to having children.  It really all depends on different factors like, body type, hormone changes, natural fat distribution, stress level, and genetics.  If your mom or grandmothers gained weight in their tummy you probably will too and it can be the hardest to get rid of.  I do understand your frustration, though.  I gained 20 lbs and it all went to my flat little tummy.  I now feel 6 months pregnant when I look in the mirror.

I've heard that the fat in your belly is directly related to cortisol levels (stress hormone).  Our ancestors would develop this in times of crisis.  Then their bodies can actually live off of the fat stores when there was a shortage of food.  Well, most of us don't have  food shortage's anymore so our bodies probably just hold on to it.  Get your stress level down (and eat healthy) and your body should feel less need to hold on to it.
