Swelling in hands, feet, ankles

I have been getting a lot of swelling in my hands, fingers, feet and ankles.  My doctor is having a hard time figuring out what is wrong and I am scheduled to see an arthritis specialist in December even though my blood tests are not giving clear indications of that.  My husband and I have been trying to lose weight and have cut out the regular red wine drinking we do.  My swelling and pain has been better.  Tonight I had some red wine and can feel the swelling returning and am so uncomortable.  What could be causing this in the wine?

Thank you for your comments.  I will continue down my path of exploring arthritis and check out the sleep apnea.  I know that my sleep has been interrupted a lot lately due to perimenopausal night sweats.

Just to add to the things already mentioned for consideration, how is your sleep? People with sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, can experience edema when their sleep is not restorative enough for the kidneys to perform their overnight functions. That came to mind also because you mentioned trying to lose weight. Excess weight can be both caused by and a cause of sleep apnea. People with sleep disorders tend to experience increased levels of pain too.

Good luck at finding answers.

Hello,

Swelling of the hands and feet can be due to many causes. One if them is arthritis(Arthritis means "joint inflammation") esp Rheumatoid arthritis(confirmed by rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP antibodies, C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sed rate (ESR)and gout.

Other conditions can be SLE(an autoimmune disease) and edema(fluid accumulation in the body. It can be caused by reduced kidney function, chronic kidney disease, congestive heart disease, varicose veins, phlebitis, protein or thiamine deficiency, sodium retention, or cancer).

If you are feeling it to be an allergic reaction to wine, then it may be due to allergy to sulfites. All wines contain sulfites, because yeast naturally produces sulfite compounds during the fermentation process, and without sulfites, wine would spoil and oxidize. White wine has more sulfites than red wine.

I feel that alone wine ingestion is not responsible for these swellings.A predisposing pathology has to be there. As you are a perimenopausal female,so the chances of arthritis are more likely.

Hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep us posted if you want any more information.
