Vaginal itching around time of period?

For the past 4 months, I've developed a terrible itch/redness in the vaginal area about 5 days prior to my period; it goes away 2 or 3 days after I 'start.'

I've never had a yeast infection before, but the first month it happened I assumed that's what it was.  I treated it OTC to save a trip to the doctor.  Since then, I've just lived with it until it passed.

I have an annual exam coming up within the next month, and this problem is top of my list for discussion.  However, if anyone has any advice or personal experience with something similar, I'd really appreciate hearing about it.

P.S.  I'm married and both of us are completely monogamous - it cannot be an STD of any sort.  Haven't changed laundry detergent, body soap, lotion, perfume, or anything else I can think of in quite some time.

Wow..... I am so relieved to know this is a common thing. I was so scared and worried that this was something just seriously wrong with me. It started over a year ago and has been happening just about every month 1 week before my period. OMG, its horrible, the soreness and itchiness and discharge is disgusting. I try to take a shower at least 3 times a day and try to clean the are as best as i can but its so tender that I can barely touch it much less clean it. I know my husband must be sick of hearing me complain and deny him of sex every month around the same time because it's as if he has to hold out for 2 weeks every month without sex (1 week because of this irritation then the other week because of period) I have been to doctorS and ran test of all sorts yet no one seems to be able to help. I've been on that pill for 7 days and even gave my husband one just in case it was a bacteria that we kept passing back and forth and the first month after i was fine but then here i am again another month of going thru this all over again. I am frustrated and sick of going thru this. Please if anyone has the secret to this i will pay any amount of money lol.
Good luck to everyone because i KNOW how horrible this is.

Thanks for the update!! Sounds like your have done your home work! LOL I am actually trying the RepHresh vaginal gel inserts that are made to balance the ph and so far so good. I like you have been using  petroleum based ointment that has triple antibiotics. It seems to work pretty good. I started the inserts just after my cycle and am taking the RepHresh Pro-B  capsules in conjunction, since they are best used together. I will let you ladies know how that goes, but so far so good! We have to keep on keeping on!!! Good luck to you all!!

Thank you for all your  post! I feel better knowing that I am not the only one with this problem.

I am going insane with this itching!! it started last year in September when I got sick and took antibiotics. Took vagisil but no help got prescription Terazol cream and worked like magic. After 1 month itching started again before and after my period. I am still itching now!!

I would rather suffer migraine than suffer this itch!! I get mad and sometimes feels guilty because i snap at people around me. :(

Why there isn't a medication for this problem?

I just started having this issue for the 3rd cycel now. I have bben to the doc , had a pap and it came back normal. She of course tried to treat me with an OTC yeast treatment, then a few coursed of Diflucan. I seemed to get some relief eventually then it went away til my next cycle. I am tired of this and her telling me it's yeast when I know it''s not. I am a diabetic and have had my share of yeast infections. However this is different, I have to discharge, no odor, and the itch is very concentrated just at the vaginal opening. No sores, no STD's, but just this malicious itching. I did try a month without tampons at the doc's advice, since Diabetics shouldn't use them as they are at a higher risk for infections. First time I had ever heard that one! Anyways last month I bought the screening kit for vaginal infections that Vagisil puts out and my ph is in "normal range" I did however try the REpHresh Pro-B Probiotics for feminine health for 4 weeks and it was gone. Ironically I ran out just about 5 days before my current cycle and guess what , yes it's back! I was wondering if any of you ladies have ever used Lysteda for heavy bleeding during your cyles? I started on this about November of last year as am curious if it could be a side effect that has not been reported. I know that it can cause your body to develop clots and cysts. That's another issue, I just got off those and am trying a natural Homeopathic remedy called Sabina and so far it's working great for the heavy flow. They are tiny little pellets that have no side effects and are all natural. You can find them in most health food stores and at the Vitamin Shoppe. I as a few of these other ladies sometimes experience the itching around my anal area too. This just ***** all together. I was really surprised to see this blog and so many other women out there with similar issues. I know there have to be thousand if not more that are too ashamed to talk about it. If our doc's don;t listen who will? Please let me know if any of you have used Lysteda and have had these issues as well. I wish the best for you all and hope we all get cure! Good luck ladies and bless you all! <3

Im glad I saved to my favorites and found this page again. I have had this problem off and on for the past 2 years. It is a very unconfortable feeling. It seems to come on when my period is early. I am on a low estrogen birth control pill that is called Camilla. There is another name for it but I cant think of it right now. Low estrogen pills are suppose to be good for blood pressure. All the pills are the same there are no placebo pills for the day your period is on you are to take every single day! During these months I was off the pill I did not have the problem. Well I have been back on for a month. Unlike some of you as soon as I see a little pink then I feel the itching. The itching is right in the entrance. I have been tested for stds and etc as well and everything is fine. For years I was thinking something is wrong with my blood. I had one doctor tell me that it was some sort of discharge that comes before bleeding. Then I had another doctor tell me that its normal for the whole cycle. I thought it was pads then I switched to tampons. That was the same issue. Then I used vagisil and it made it worse. Years ago I used to use something called Norforms right before period and that worked. I cant find it in stores now and when you ask a clerk they have no idea what you are talking about. I know about them from my mother and I tried one years ago when I seen it in bathroom. Im 39 so maybe its an old school thing. I tried something for 2 months before I stopped the pill and it worked. Late last night when I went to the bathroom to wipe it seems to get worse... seems until you pray it away. Well I just moved and I just tore open some unlabeled boxes to find my homemade remedy that seems to work great and for some friends. Everyone says I use these things for everything! What I do is take 2 prenatal vitamins orally and I take an omega 3 fish softgel tablet or a vitamin e soft gel tablet or mix the 2 by poking a whole and squeezing half of it out and rub in the entrance not to far in. ITSTANT RELIEF! Make sure its gluten free, No artificial color or flavor and most of all yeast free tablets! Now the other thing I know works and it works for this and other issues but it makes you feel self conscious and you have to test it out before on a weekend at home. Chop a clove of garlic at least a teaspoon full ( do half when trying it out) and dont chew just swallow in the early evenings. I know some can not do this because it will go through your poors and even with the fish oil softgel solution you have to be careful with the ones that have a strong odor if you use to much. If you cant use the fish oil then just use the vitamin e alone and it should work.  I ALSO HAVE BEEN ON THIS HEMMOROID CREME KICK FROM MOSQITO BITES TO A MINOR CUT TO A PIMPLE OR SWELLING OF MY EYES AND IT WORKS. A friend teases me about this and she use a dot size she said with the vitamin E softgel and it took away her vaginal itching. She figured thats what I have also done.Well I tried that along with the fish and vitamin E oil this morning and it has given me relief. The oils seem to work for a few hours even if you go to bathroom and wipe. I have told  3 friends and they have been doing it and actually come and bring me small containers to mix it up for them. Give it a try and let me know what you think @***@****.
I hope this works for all of you as well. Nothing beats a try! Oh and Scott tissue is the best thing to use. Charmin will irritate it more and the cheap paper in public bathrooms so keep that in mind!. I do think there is a link for me when I eat yogurt, icecream or cake. It gets worse or I feel it sometimes when its not that tme of month. I think being lactose intolerent is part of it. The best thing for all to do is make a log of all the foods you eat 10 before period and what you eat during. Make sure you put the times and when the itching starts. I ate the doughnut and it was about a couple hours after. If I eat something lets say and lay down I will wake up after 2 hours and itch. If I drink a Mcdonalds smoothie I get this during premenstrual. I do think its what we put in our bodys or for some what our bodys are lacking. Well I have to go for now. Remember my name and maybe I can make it to that show Shark Tank! lol
