What is it?

I have swelling in my ankles and legs, and I'm thinking in my abdomen as well.  I have had weight gain.  Sometimes I can gain (or lose) up to 5-7 lbs. in any given day.

I sometimes have heart palpitations, chest pain.  Also, I seem to be having heartburn quite frequently.

Yesterday and today I have had pain in my back just above my waist on the left side.

My lungs seem to be filled with fluid, and often I am short of breath.  I have difficulty climbing stairs, which I don't understand, as I have never had pain in my muscles (I'm a dancer).

Can someone tell me what is going on?

Thank you.

I'm happy things worked out.

A kidney infection will do that. Make sure you follow the medication protocol exactly.

Thank goodness you got it taken care of!

Think about getting a rocking chair, which was an early medical device. As you push the chair back the muscles contract and force blood and lymphatic fluid upwards.

Thank you for all of your comments.  I went to see a physician.  As it turns out, I had a kidney infection, early stage, and I am much better now.  However, I return to see my physician on Monday to have a closer look at heart and lungs.  My bloodwork is entirely normal, including a screen of thyroid, liver, etc.  No, I am not expecting, as I am post-menopausal.  I am concerned about my heart, though.  It seems that I need to be making a life-style change.  The swelling has dissipated now that the kidney is functioning better, although my feet still swell a little in the late afternoons, I understand that this is normal in the summertime for most people.

Again, I thank all of you for you concern, your help, and your assistance.  I will keep you posted as to the outcome of heart and lung tests.

Most sincerely,
Kate

Doctornee pretty much outlined everything.

You need a general work-up by a physician who will pay attention to you. I have a tingly feeling that you might have heart function problems so this should be done in a reasonably short period of time.  I'd like to see you get a stress, but in view of your breathing problems the physician may not advise that. Let them use their own judgement. This is not "general Quarters", but sometime in the next three or four weeks you must have an examination. This something you "have to do".

The "shortness of breath" also concerns me. Much moreso than the swelling. Your problems have the potential to be life-threatening.

If you develop air hunger at night, don't hesitate to call 911.

Your symptoms suggest pulmonary edema, which is quite serious. This may not be the problem. There is no substitute for an in-person evaluation by a physician who takes a detailed history.

Before you visit the doctor again take a notebook and make a "time-line" of all the symtoms. When they first developed. If there was any pain. Was ther a progression where the swelling got worse. Are the symptoms better or worse at any time of the day? Have you ever experienced chest pain?

There is a very short time available when you are examined and thinking about these questions before hand makes you use it efficiently.

Between now and the time you see your physician get some crystaline vitamin C and take 1200 mg in four divided doses with food. Vitamin C is a mild diuretic with no contraindications. With high doses you get loose stool, but 1200 mg shouldn't cause that problem.

After you get evaluated post back here and state what they tell you.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Usually conditions of heart, kidney, liver or low protein or severe anemia cause both ankles, and or legs to swell. Hence if both ankles are swelling then you will need to get heart function assessed by ECHO and EKG, get kidney and liver function tests done and get a complete blood picture for anemia. Low sodium in blood, hypothyroidism and malabsorption syndromes causing low protein in blood have to be looked into. Please consult a doctor ASAP as you have breathlessness too, maybe rush to ER. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
