burning tongue

ood day I am 29 years old female last year I develop this sickness which is still affecting me now in august of last year I got an ear infection which later led to a sore throat I was diagnose with strep throat I was given (amoxicillin). well  after my ear infection clear  up I was left with this feeling as if something was stuck in my throat I went to ENT the Doctor did the scope but didn't see anything I was given nasal spray ( Nasonex)  weeks after I went back to see ENT the doctor said I should do a deep tissue test on my neck that came back ok.  The feeling as if something was stuck in my throat started keeping me up at night because of this feeling I started having panic attack this sickness was basically destroying my life I was rush to the ER  for panic attack I was given (Activan). In november I started having this feeling like my tongue was burning also like something was pinching me inside my tongue it also felt as if tiny pieces of rocks were in my tongue but it was only the left side of my tongue the right side felt find I went back to the ENT the doctor prescribe (Pantoprazole) the doctor said maybe I was having some type of reflux problem but like the other medications I was still in pain and back at the beginning.  because of this feeling nobody wanted to be around me because all I was doing is complaining about my problem I was doing research but I still couldn't find why I was having these problem before this sickness I was a healthy person I don't do drugs, drink or smoke. I went back to the ENT I was told to do a cat scan on my neck but the test came back ok I was refer to see a Neurologist after awhile the feeling of something stuck in my throat fade and the tongue was the main focus my tongue feel slightly swollen I went to the dentist and told the doctor what I was feeling the doctor took some saliva send it for testing but I was told no bacteria was detected from the test of the saliva I hear the Doctors talking one Doctor said it could be  glossodynia  but another doctor said  was too young so I was given (chlorhexidine glu 0.12 %) I was told to use it for seven days but after seven days nothing change.  So I went back to the dentist and was refer to a Neurologist. my visited to the Neurologist  I was told by the Neurologist   that I should do some blood work also a brain scan to rule out the worst I did the brain scan I was told that the left side of my brain where it should be grey had a little white spot  but the Doctor said sometime that happen if you have migraine headaches and because of what I am going through I was having headache every day the doctor said that there was nothing  he could diagnose me with because the spot was too small I was given( neurontin) I am still having the same problem I would love to know if there is a doctor that specialize in the tongue.  Also I was test for thyroid problem but nothing was found. Am taking vitamin. Thank you

Burning tongue can be caused by a b12 deficiency.  You should be tested for b12 levels and if they are even border-line you should take b12 supplements.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The burning tongue can be due to menopause like condition caused by PCOD or hormonal disturbances, or due to vitamin B12 deficiency. You may not have any other symptom of Vit B12 deficiency if it is in its initial stage. Iron deficiency and Vit B6 or pyridoxine deficiency may also be associated as the tongue swells on a bad day. The other possibility is allergy to some food preservative or to propylene glycol which is found in some food items, drugs and cosmetics. Maybe your dental paste has it. Check this out. Possibility of any drugs causing it or dry mouth, oral cancer, damage to the lingual nerve, and diabetes are the other causes for a burning tongue and if nothing else is found these should be explored. It can also be gastric reflux (ruled out in your case. If all common causes of a feeling of something stuck in the throat or a foreign body sensation in the throat has been ruled out (post nasal drip, gastric reflux, allergy by a skin test or RAST panel, food allergy), then rare causes will have to be looked into. One is upper esophageal dysmotility—can be known by endoscopy and barium meal. Projecting superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage is another possibility and surgically trimming it can help. Esophageal candidiasis or fungal infection, gonococcal pharyngits, chemical burn of esophagus due to acid, and cancer of the esophagus are some other causes. Another possibility is irritation of the anterior fibers of C2-3 spinal nerves with spasm of the muscles attached to hyoid bone. This usually happens due to injury or postural problems causing curving of lower cervical spine. If everything is ruled out then the problem could be psychogenic and counseling may help.
I hope this helps narrow down the cause and treat your problem. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral.
Take care!
