chest, hot, hard, red lump

I have a hot, hard, red lump in my chest.  The lump is 4.5" long, 1.25" high and can be moved under the skin.  It has been progressing for three weeks.  The last week the skin has been peeling. For the last two days it began forming blisters on the skin.  It has not responded to a week course of amoxycillin.  I have been taking bactrin for four days to no improvement.  It was lanced by a medical 'professional' who thought it might be pus but only blood appeared.  I have no fever, blood pressure is normal, heart rate normal.  No loss of appetite.  The lump is tender to the touch and getting worse.  It now sends out waves of minor pain through the area.  No connection between the pain and exertion.  I spent the past two months n the Bahamas and I suppose some alien life form there may have bitten me or laid eggs in there or whatever.  Any ideas on what it is or at least what kind of doctor I should seek out?

Your symptoms reminded me of when I had an abscess.
As blood was drained from it it sounds more like a hematoma.

Your family doctor should be able to advise you.  Is it feasible to follow up with the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics and lanced the wound?

You might need a further course on antibiotics.  The skin stuff sounds odd to me.  I thought it might have been sunburn but the progression sounds wrong.  You could see if members on the dermatology forum have ideas.

I would probably start with the doctor who is most accessible to you.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
A tender red or inflamed lump could be a hair follicle infection that enlarged, a boil, an abscess, an infected cyst, an infected hematoma or an insect bite that got infected. Since you have had a course of antibiotics and this has not helped, the best thing to do would be consult a doctor. You would probably need an incision and drainage of the lump, followed by local antibiotic application and dressing.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

It looks like some sort of bite.  I would recommend consulting an Infectious Disease Specialist.

Keep us posted.
