pains under the ribs right side

last year i came down with pains under my ribs and it lasted for 6 weeks, i was given a gastrocopy and colonescopy and blood test and everthing was fine, no doctor could tell me what it was , beside having a fatty liver, so i went on a fat free diet , after a year this pain came back more painful than the previous time, i underwent a scan and a bowel specimen the b specimen is fine and the scan after nearly a month have not got the result, the pain is bad and i too was given pain killers and i do not like to take them as i am on coumadin and would interfere, i saw a doctor in emergency monday nite pass and he thinks its arthritis in my ribs, but not sure, i am unable to do many things like housework or bending down, it stessing me and i dont know what else is going to happen.

It sounds like what I have..Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction.  It is spasms of the bial ducts and hard to diagnose without an ERCP with manometry that checks the pressure in the bial ducts.   It can only be performed by a G.I. doctor that specializes in this type of procedure, usually an interventional  gastrointerologist.  There are not a lot of doctors that are familiar with the disease let alone how to properly treat it or have the correct equipment  that can perform the test to diagnosis it.  SOD usually comes on after the gallbladder is removed.  I was great for one year then it came on almost a year to the date after my gallbladder was removed.  This is just a possibility as what you describe sounds similar to what I have.  I hope this helps and you feel better soon.

did they check your appendix and gall bladder? I would imagine they would have been one of the first things they would have checked. But if they did not check them, you should have them checked. those are both on your right side under your ribs. (I have had both removed, which is how I know this.) I hope you feel better soon!

I have 2 suggestions based on my own previous experiences, but it depends on where the pain is under your ribs -- what side, front or back, high or low, etc.

1. On 2 separate occasions, I've had severe pain under my ribs on my upper left side that, after testing, xrays, etc, was determined to be either pleurisy or costrocondritis, and were probably related to wearing tight clothing (like a girdle, basically) for many hours in a row, right up against a major scar that I have on that side, along with the consumption of some alcohol (I was at a party).

2. I had severe, stabbing pains that came and went under my ribs on my upper right side in the front - felt like right above my stomach, but below my chest.  These came and went over about a 6 month period of time.  I had many tests (colonoscopy, endoscopy, xrays, ultrasounds, etc), and no one could find anything. I finally spoke with a doctor who said she'd seen this happen to 1 other person (where all the signs pointed to gall bladder issues, but all of the tests were negative), and sent her (and ultimately me) to an area surgeon who reviewed her results and removed her gall bladder anyhow, and all of her pain was magically gone. I went to the same surgeon, who said there are multiple things that can be happening with gall bladders that no one ever tests for, and removal is the best way to fix it.  After reviewing my records, he decided that removing my gall bladder would be the best course of action, so he did, and I haven't had those pains since!  That was almost 6 months ago!

In any case, I don't know if either of those will help, but I do hope someone can find you some relief!  Good luck!
