what symptoms did you have while having thyroid problems?
Hi Canadaguy,
I actually have both GERD and Thyroid problems. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate. But if you can get to a clinic or Doc. The tests are really easy. For thyroid it is a blood test. For GERD it depends on the Dr. Mine just asked me questions. My experience is if your thyroid needs help they give you a pill to take. They gave me Sinthroid. It did WONDERS for me. I wasn't fatigued. My hair grew thicker. I just felt 100% better.
I agree with others about the Nexium. It really helps, but it is a prescription. It sounds like going to the doctor would really help.

thanks doctor for the information and moomanoo your right, i would rather know what the problem is. But things dealing with the inside of your throat or stomach arent exactly a pleasant thought.. To me its not like i just have a little cold and in a few days ill be better. No instead i have this constant heartburn and food coming back up in my throat. Also ive been told to look at my thyroid which i dont think its the problem, but still to even think about it scares me.
Of course i could go into a walk in clinic without a hassle, but once a again the fear of going!... Everyone that has responded to me has said avoid the foods that bother me, ok i can but that means completely taking all the food out of my house . I dont own alot of fruits and veggies
I really don't think your problems are life threatening, but wouldn't you rather know that.
Surely there is some doctor you could go to, and pay for a script that will fix your problem and ease your mind.
In Australia, there are alot of clinics that won't take new patients, however, there are also one's that will and who bulk bill. I believe Canada's health system is similar.
If you can't go to a Doctor, as hard as it may be, why don't you avoid the foods and drinks we are telling you to, or that you know make it worse, for a while, and see if it goes away......
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Whether or not it is GERD you can know by following this: You will need to take a combination of medications like a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole empty stomach in the morning and an antacid gel after meals for complete relief. Possibility of H pylori infection too should be looked into and a combination antibiotic tried.
Life style changes that will help include: Avoid heavy meals and eat frequent small meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, smoking, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bed at least 2 hours after food. Maybe these tips will help you.
You should consult a gastroenterologist (a specialist who looks after the diseases of our digestive system) or a physician for this if these tips reduce your symptoms.
If this does not help, then the thyroid function should be assessed. Another possibility is post nasal drip due to allergies, chronic sinusitis etc.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
isnt nexium a prescription? it works wonders if you have a doctor to give it to you. i Havent been to a doctor in years. I havent really had anything wrong with me so i never went but ever since i havent been able to find a job in over a year, all of a sudden these crazy symptoms started happening. mainly i think because of my un healthy lifestlye. Its very easy to not to the right things for your body when you arent in a routine.
Like you said moomanoo, cheese and spicy foods are really bad for you, the same goes for me. As soon as i eat cheese(which i love) i get like instant heartburn. ritz cheese crackers seem to be the all time worse.. and i love spicy italian or mexican food, its hard to just stay away from that stuff.
Listen everybody i am not here to whine or cry about my problems and not take this serious. I really do appreciate your answers and suggestions. I guess i am just a little scared to go to the doctor and know what is wrong with me, i always think the worse. I think if i go there, then i will walk out of the office with more of serious problem like cancer or having to have surgeory or something. I am 25 still young and i try to be tough, but really deep down inside i am not so tough. Maybe i am making this a bigger deal then what it really is? who knows?
I tend to also agree with shelleyc123. As I said, I suffer from anxiety/stress and also GERD, and have these symptoms. I take NEXIUM and it works wonders. But as last comment also said, you need to make sure you are compliant. I have stopped taking it before, and in time, the symptoms return.
Food like chips and popcorn wouldn't be good for this. Fatty foods are bad for me, cheese, cream, spicy foods, and the worst thing for me is anything with garlic in it.
ive tried tums, pepto bismol, zantac,i just bought gaviscon liquid. so i am going to try the gaviscon and zantac see how that works. i always stop eating like 1hour before bed which usually consits of chips or popcorn(three hours seems like a long time lol)... i eleavte head, i guess it works i havent woken up in awhile with heartburn. i dont drink alcohol or coffee to much. Just a cup of coffee a day and i drink 3-4 beers maybe every couple of weeks. I am not overweight, but i have gained about 40 in about 5 years. i am sure i could loose a few pounds!!
Thank you again to all who types to me. I really appreciate your answers and suggestions, if you have anymore please let me know!
Sounds like classic GERD to me. Have you tried antacids, do not eat 3 hours before bed, elevate head, avoid spicy, greasy food and eat smaller meals, avoid caffeine and alcohol.
thanks to everyone for your responses. i guess the only reason why i seem to be ignoring the thyroid possibilites is because of the constant heartburn/acid and food coming up in my throat. i really dont think thyroid conditions cause all those symptoms? the only reason i assume its either heartburn or thryoid because thats what everything seems to point to.
If anyone looks up GERD symptoms online, there is usually an article or two about people complaining of feeling of food sticking in their throats. specialists say its because of the food and acid coming back up into the throat..
i take zantac when i feel symptoms coming on which does help, i just dont want to take that like everyday. I know lifestyle changes is probably the best thing to do, i just have a hard time doing it, thats the big problem for me
Hi canadaguy
First of all you need some thyroid bloodtests, firstly a thyroid profile, simple blood test.
Secondly you need to try a treatment for acid reflux, GERD, and see after a couple of weeks do you still have the problem.
TThen if the problem is still there you need some further investigations, maybe a barium swallow, and a thyroid ultrasound. etc....
Thyroid disease can run in families, so just dont rule it out.
I have thyroid disease, and so does my brother also ,so it could be thyroid related.
Also there are a few different thyroid diseases, all giving similar, but different symptoms, which can overlap one another.
Remember do not stress your self out because stress, causes both of these illnesses to go worse, so stress is best avoided.
Hope this helps, if you need anymore info just get back to me or message me. and i will gladly try to help.
Good luck
Nicola
Hi,
I don't really know much about thyroid problems, however I suffer from GERD.
I don't recall ever feeling like I have something stuck in my throat though.
My symptoms are worse at night. Eating garlic is the worst thing for mine. And it's really bad if I don't wait at least three hours after tea before I go to bed. I have a burning pain in my chest, with heaviness of the chest, mainly on the left side, and it goes into my left arm. I also sometimes have slight regurgitation of acid.I take NEXIUM tablets for this. You really need to go to a doctor/clinic, and get tests for thyroid, to rule that out.
yes i posted something like this before....i dont have a family doctor
Did you not post this before? Did you ever consult your PCP/Family Physician?
I thought it was GERD then and I still think it is GERD. Please see a physician.
