vomiting and diahorria

my 3 year old daughter has been vomiting and diahorria for 3 weeks now only at night from around 11.30pm onwards, doctors have ruled out a virus and have given her ranitidine as they think it could be reflux in liquid form to be given x2 am and pm and this has still not worked, I am really worried and would love some help, she is fine during the day apart from diahorria she gets that during the night and in the mornings. Any advice or help would be much appreciated.x

It is a worry for any mother when their child is ill.

Hope the appointment comes through quickly so that they can find out what is causing her the problem and to alleviate any obstructions.

My daughter used to suffer with mesenteric adenitis that used to make her very unwell.

Does she go to play group that may be causing her psychologycal problems or eating something there that does not agree with her?

Wishing you all the best. xx

Keep a record of what she is eating and drinking to see if there is a connection.

If she is off her food, just give her plenty of warm juices, water and jelly to get the fluids in.  Do not give her any fizzy drinks or milk or dairy products or any chocolate until she stops the diahorria and vomitting.

Peeled apples should be OK if she is likes that, but limit grapes and peel the skin off them too.  If she eats tomatoes, peel the skin of them as well.

The main thing is for her not to get dehydrated through the diahoria and vomitting so it is very important to make sure she gets her fluids.  You can get Diorelite for children in blackcurrant and orange flavour.  But my kids never liked them.

When she goes to the toilet have a look what comes out.  Also observe if she it scratching her bottom.  Children can pick up all sorts of things and what you are look for is threadworms.  These are very thin thread like white worms.  They come out at night and lay eggs around the anus, hence the itching.  Teach her to wash her hands after she has been to use the toilet and always before she eats.

Hope she is better soon.

As the ranitidine is not working (don't know how long she has been on it and how it works), I suggest you take her back to the doctor.  As she is 3, he may give you a prescription for Diorelite (don't know if I spelled that right) instead of you buying it.

Best wishes.
