UTI caused by passion fruit based vitamin drink

I take a passion fruit based vitamin drink and on one occasion I purchased a bottle of it that gave me a uti immediately after I drink one one oz.  I thought that it may have been caused by something else so months later I tried it again and got another uti infection. Then a few weeks later I decided to try it one more time to make sure this was the cause and I got another infection. I did not think you get a uti from ingesting something. I had thought if the drink contained bacteria I would get a stomach ache but not a uti. Is this possible? It seems like it must be, but why and how is what I am wondering.
Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to provide all that info. I had not heard that passion fruit was used to treat UTI. But I wonder if the passion fruit is too acidic for me. The last time I tired it I mixed it with alkaline water just in case that was the problem but still got an infection. But maybe that one batch was REALLY acidic and mixing  it with water didn't bring the ph up enough.
And yes I have also read that keeping your urine more alkaline  may be better so I no longer use cranberry pills or drink the unsweetned cranberry juice I was buying from the health food store.
But I have tried  almost everything else you suggested.
I take Lactobicillis Sporengenes now because I read it is the most effective pro-biotic for the majority of people. I had previously tried other acidophilus and pro-bioitcs (Dr. Udo's)  but they did not help. But I did not try the bioK+ acidophilius yet.  Uva ursa seems to help and so does coleus forskohlii, also an alkaline. (I have ph test papers so I can test my drinking water, etc.) On the second to last UTI I tried drinking a 1/2 of a tea.of baking soda mixed with alkaline water every few hours for the first day and that did relieve the symptoms a bit.  And during the same infection I ate nothing for two days but fresh cooked blanched asparagus, white tea three times a day with Uva ursa, goldenseal  three times a day in warm water and some celtic sea salt too. All alkaline. After three days I was fine but when I tried all that again with my last infection none of those things worked and I needed anti-biotics to clear it up.
I tired D-Mannose in the past too because I had read that worked for almost everyone.  And on the bottle it said to take it with cranberry juice, so I took it with unsweetened cranberry juice and water every couple of hours and the infection than spread to my kidneys and my temp rose to 102. I have since read that cranberry and D-Mannose should not be used together when you already have an infection because the cranberry can make your urine too acidic and then the bacteria will multiply. I think that is what probably happened.  And I did try it again with just water at the start of this last infection before taking anti-biotics and it did nothing for me.  The more I think about this the more I have to wonder if I did not get rid of all the bacteria from my bladder the first time I had an infection because I did not take all of the anti-biotics that first time.  Since then I was given 3 day bactrim and was told that taking it for 10 days was not necessary for most people.  But I did read that some doctors still prescribe it for 10 , so maybe I need it for 10 or I may need to be switched to another anti-biotic.
But for me the question remains....why did this drink give me or set off an infection three times?  The only conclusion I can come to at this moment is that the drink is too acidic and that maybe that one batch was so extremely acidic that my bladder had residual bacteria the anti-biotics had not eliminated. And then when the acidic juice hit my bladder the bacteria that were there began growing rapidly and set off an infection. Please tell me if you think that appears to be the most logical conclusion. If so I will go to a urologist next time and not my regular doctor and get a urine senstivity culture done to see exactly what bacteria are there and see if I need a stronger of different anti-biotic.

2 years ago I was in ICU with a very bad Kidney infection. Yesterday I was back in the hospital for the same thing. Guess what I was drinking both times... passion fruit juice.. very scary not sure why it would cause UTI/Kidney infection. & this juice is in a form of powder that is added to water. I have finally made the conclusion that it was the passion fruit..  I'm asking myself why also..

very strange.and you are right if it is an allergy you wouldn't need antibiotics.i do not know if goldenseal or any other natural remedy would help but read these.

PASSION FRUIT - is rich in vitamin C, potassium, and other minerals. Traditional medicine has used the Passion fruit to treat urinary tract infections. A University of Florida study conducted in 2004 found an extract from the juice reduced cancer in cell culture.

Calcium citrate and goldenseal - Although there remains some controversy about what pH is most conducive to bacteria growth in the urinary tract, most evidence seems to indicate that the majority of UTIs benefit from an alkaline pH. The easiest way to alkalize the urine is with minerals, specifically potassium citrate and sodium citrate.

Cranberry and uva ursi - Don't take the two together. Taking cranberry juice (or pills, tablets, etc.) acidifies the urine, while uva ursi acts as an antiseptic/diuretic and it alkalizes urine. They counteract each other.

Also, mega doses of bio-K+ acidophilus, CranActin pill (sometimes two every half hour) combined with D-mannose is a good combination.

I have not had sex for the last year, nor do I wash with scented soaps and  I have immaculate hygiene.  I have spent hundreds of hours reading up on possible ways I could have obtained this infection but none apply to me.
And no it does not seem possible from anything I have read that I would get a UTI from this drink but it has happend three times with symptoms of frequent urination showing up within 5 minutes on all three occasions and the infection becoming worse until I am treated with anti-biotics. And after two days of anti-biotics the symptoms are almost all gone even though I continue to take them.  I just thought of something....I had heard that goldenseal works to treat UTI because it is one of the only nautral medicines that definitely goes through the renal tract. I wonder if a perservative in the drink does the same thing and I am allergic to it? But then why would I need anti-biotics to make it go away?  Unless something in the drink sets off and grows some pre-exisitng  bacteria on the wall of my bladder that was not completely killed off with previous anti-biotics.  Do either of these seem possible?

because Most types of E. Coli bacteria live harmlessly in our digestive tracts. Disease causing E. Coli spreads to humans by contact with human or animal feces that is in contaminated food or in contaminated water.if the drink contained feces then it would make you sick but not give you a UTI.yes it is possible that another bacteria or allergen entered your bloodstream but again this would not cause a UTI.most UTI's are caused by bacteria entering your body through sex.

I do not want to mention the name of the product out of respect for them as they are a small company that I enjoy doing business with.  And I feel this problem may have been a once batch issue as the previous and current bottles are not problematic for me. Also my husband has tried the same amount from the same bottle with no problems.  The company did tell me that that batch was made by a recipe they used previously that contained a different sweetner but I am wondering if it also contained a preservative that I may be allergic too. Or too much of a preservative. I don't know what else it could be if not bacteria.  But I do have a question in regards to your response. If stomach acid kills any bacteria than how do people get sick from e coli?  And isn't it possible that either the bacteria or an allergy to a certain ingredient in the drink could be directly absorbed into my blood stream?

this seems very unlikely.the acid in your stomach would kill anything bacterial in the drink.can you mention the name of the drink?
