PSA elevation and free PSA elevation

My husband is 50, recent PSA was 4.1 and free PSA was 12%.  MD has put him on Bactrim DS BID for ten days, then will repeat PSA and do a transrectal ultrasound. My husband is convinced this is cancer.  What would be the next step?

I am worried. My PSA level read.55 but my free PSA reads .12, but my doctor did not call me in for any consultation. Are my results any red flag? I am worried!

I am not a doctor, but after helping many friends with this issue, I would advise you to wait for the results of the next PSA test. The doctor's usual first step is to try antibiotics to see if the cause is an infection. Many times, the PSA level will drop after treatment. Although a level of 4.1 is not really high, the doctor also will factor in how fast it has risen from the previous readings.  Also, a free PSA level of 12% in a 50-year old male has been shown by studies to present about a one-in-four chance for prostate cancer.

Again, I am not a doctor, but wait for the next test result and keep us informed.

Good luck
