Self-catherization and penile pain

I've been self-catherizing now for almost a month. I am getting 'positional' pain in my penis.(ex. If I bend over or lay on my left side, it hurts. It sometimes hurts when I sit on a soft couch, as well.) I'm wondering it this is caused by some accidental irritation of the urethra. I'm also wondering if anyone out there has had a similiar problem and how I can stop this. It's a MAJOR discomfort that I am praying will go away. My urologist had no answer for this. Thanks

Hi,

When I first started to self cath. I too experienced some discomfort after catheterization. Over time I got used to it.

One thing that you might want to try is to ask your doctor for a prescription of Xylocain Jelly (2%) or cream (5%). Apply it to the catheter and squirt some of it down the urethra. Cleanliness is a must to avoid infections. The Xylocain some what numbs the urethra.

A fair amount of lubrication might also make things easier. Avoid applying too much pressure onto the catheter while inserting it into the penis and past the prostate. Appearently I did this causing a fistula between my prostate and rectum. Because of that I now have a suprapubic catheter, and I very much wish that I could go back to self catheterization. It is very unlikely that I will be able to do so.

All the best,

Ron

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It looks like trauma to the penis while self catheterization. Application of warm compresses and oral antiinflammatories like ibuprofen/acetaminophen are also helpful. If the symptoms are severe then it will be best to consult a urologist.

Hope it helps. Take care and regards.
