UTI-like symptoms after painful orgasm

i am a 46 year old woman who has been experiencing orgasm/bladder pain on & off for about 10 weeks. There have been 2 episodes that follow this pattern: I am asymptomatic; I have sex; upon orgasm, there is a searing pain that feels as if it shoots from my clitoris into my bladder; this is followed by 10-14 days of UTI-like symptoms (pelvic pain & burning/frequency/urgency). I went to the Dr. both times and got antibiotics which did not help. The symptoms of the first episode went away on their own and I was symptom free and able to have painless orgasms for about 10 days. Then, I experienced pain upon orgasm again, and the symptoms all came back. I have an appointment for a full physical in 2 weeks and she wants to refer me to a urologist, but in the meantime, can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Hi,

When was the last time you had a pelvic examination done? Was a pap smear done recently?

I suggest that aside from a urologic examination, a gynecologic consult will also be able to help. Prolonged pelvic pain in women may be due to interstitial cystitis ( which is usually overlooked ) and other conditions that may involve gynecologic structures like endometriosis. These are just differentials. Some of these pain may also be nerve related.

Do push through with your urologic consult and keep us posted .

I am a 26 y/o female with the same exact symptoms.  Upon orgasm, I feel my muscles tighten and the same searing pain that feels as if it is going right up my urethra and bladder.  If I trace it on the outside of my stomach, it goes from my pubic bone up and slightly to my right, right beside my belly button.  I'm also experiencing UTI like symptoms after that.  I had a urinalysis which showed no infection and was given no antibiotic.  I was referred to a urologist who took a urine sample and found some blood, although nothing visible by the naked eye.  He also gave a manual exam and said everything seemed fine.  He scheduled me for a cystoscopy with hydro distention on March 19 to check for interstitial cystitis and to examine my bladder.  I'm not sure what it could be but I will report back when I get my results.  He did mention something about kidney stones but I don't feel any exruciating pain associated with that.  Please post if you're given any information.

Hope you're feeling better and thanks!

I have been having the same symptoms as you since Nov.07. I am 40.
I am going to the urologist next week.  Do you know if yours is interstitial cystitis yet?
Thanks.

ask your doctor about interstitial cystitis, one of the symptoms is pain during or after sexual intercourse.  it is treatable with a med called elmiron
