sometimes a varicocele can mask a hernia so you want to check for that and have an ultrasound at least
what is the best treatment, surgery/catheter/radio/laser for varicocele?
Hi,
A varicocele is a disorder characterized by dilatation of the veins in the scrotum.
By itself, a varicocele does not cause any symptoms and is routinely discovered during a physical examination.
Varicoceles may occur on both sides or on one side of the body.
Why was the ultrasound advised? was it for his abdominal pain?
Have you noticed whether the pain is more severe at either side of the abdomen?
Has he had any diarrhoea or flatulence recently?
It is likely that the pain is unrelated to the varicocele, but the varicocele needs to be examined further to determine whether it needs intervention at this point. Some complications of untreated varicocele include decreased fertility or infertility and testicular atrophy. Do follow this up with your physician further and discuss surgical management if warranted.
If the pain your nephew has is severe, please take him to the emergency room without delay.
Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.

Hi, probably the pain is due to varicocele only, wearing scrotal support will help in relieving pain. Surgery is the only treatment. For more information visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varicocele
