Hi,
I have been diagnosed with low vit-D (15ng/ml) and doc gave me Vit-B12 and Calcium + Folic Acid + Vit-D3 (100 IU). I know that Vit-D3 tablet of 100IU per day is very low dose considering i'm severely deficient and even checked with doc but he said to continue. After three months of taking the pills and under the sun in the morning hours (7-9am, i live in India where adequate sunshine is present mostly throughout the season), but my symptoms (sleep disturbance, insomnia and back pain) did not go away, but could see some improvements.
Out of curiosity, I took 25-hydroxy test again two days before and found the value is increased only to 18ng/ml i.e. only 3 ng/ml increase after three months. Incidentally I was having ear pain and went to ENT specialist. I told him my vitamin D level and he prescribed me Vit-D sachet of 60,000 IU to be taken once every week for 6 weeks.
I took the vit-D sachet yesterday. After that onwards, I started getting severe back pain which is on and off. The pain is worse than it is used to be before I took the vit-D sachet. I would like to know
a. the dose of 60,000 IU is turning out to be too much for me, can the back pain due to strain on kidneys due to high dose of vit-D. I am really scared on this
b. what is the ideal dose of vit-D for me to build up. Can i take dose of 1000IU or 2000IU per day as tablet. Because I do not want to take the dose too low (100IU/day) or too high (60,000 IUU/week).
thanks
Arun
50 to 60 ng/ml would be acceptable, but 80 would be even better - per Vitamin D council.
'tapanaki'.
That Vitamin D3 dose of 100 IU is quite literally NOTHING.
I would suggest you get Vitamin D3 supplements in sufficient doses where you can take 20 000 IU daily for the first 3 months, and then you could reduce it to 10 000 IU daily until you get your levels back into acceptable range.
