Metformin and weight loss

I've been taking 500 mg/day of metformin.  Just wondering if any of you have taken this, and if so, have you experienced any weight loss?

Different drugs have different effects on people. Metformin helped me loose weight, but it stopped after a while and most of it eventually was gained back. I have been on Topamax (now on 50mg daily) and haven't had any appettite reduction or weight loss. We are all affected differently. It also makes a difference of what other medications we are taking, what our stress levels are, and what metabolism rate you are. Metformin seemed to start working within a month for me. Topamax hasn't done anything - so i guess it all depends on the person. But I haven't had any migraines yet with Topamax, which is saying a lot.

anyone had any success using metformin to counter the weight gain that is caused by drugs like Seroquel or Respidol????  I am on a low dose of Seroquel and have gained 23 pounds from it.  I tried everything... diet, excercise, green tea extract pills, Topamax (which lowered my appetite but didn't shed the weight),  and I tried getting off Seroquel which didn't work out for me mentally, it really helps me.  I have been taking Metformin for 4 months and have not lost any weight. I'm reading these success stories so I'm thinking there is something I'm doing wrong.  Is ER better for weight loss?  I'm on the regular Metformin only taking 500 twice per day.  And for a while I was only taking 500 once per day.  Should I bump it up to 500 mg 3 times per day?  Does it only work if you take it before meals?  Sometimes I take it after because I forget.  Or does it work best if you take all 2 or 3 pills at once like at night?  I'm watching my carbs for the most part but I"m not on an Adkins diet.  Do you need to be on a pretty much no carb diet?  Any other suggestions????

I am 32 yo and just found out that I have a PCOS. I ve bee trying to get pregnant for the last year even though having regular period there was no success. Also medium part of my body for no reason got bigger and bigger even though I swim every day and eat very healthy. So in H 5"2 and weight 166 lbs I was every day more frustrated and wondering what is the reason. I found the very good OBGYN  who after all the test told me that i have a PCOS which couses all the problems. She put me on Metformin  twice daily 500 MG which I hope will help me to loose weight and have a baby!!!Thank you all for wonderful shares and your opynions. that was very helpful!!! Wish you all the best!!!! .

I started taking Metformin 1500mg once daily for severe PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) back in mid 2006 at that time,my flucuated from 170-180lbs and was 5'3" and went down to 115lb in mid-2009 (I'm at 140lbs now). I lost A TON of hair due to the weight loss. And if that happens to you, I suggest Biotin and Evening Primrose Oil everyday - along with a one-a-day (men's or women's) or will assure you are getting the right amount of nutrients/minerals to encourage hair growth.

I also started at the same time, Wellbutrin to quit smoking, which I did and haven't smoked since. I take the same dosage of Wellbutrin & Metformin but have slowly put on some of the weight I loss. I attribute that to several things. I am a full-time employee, mother, and college student, so I don't have a lot of time for homecooked meals, I eat a lot of fast pre-packed foods when I used to make a lot of homecooked healthy meals but do not have time for it due to my schooling. I also do not have time for my exercising that I use to due to my schooling. I also started Lexapro to help with depression & anxiety over the last few months and that's when I really started packing on the pounds (gained 20).

Now back to the Metformin, it definitely curbed my appetite, if I ate to much, my stomach would hurt and I would get bad diarrhea. It prevented me from getting full or overeating. It also just reduced my appetite and allowed me to loose weight. I think Wellbutrin also helped with this as, it helps with your addictive habits.

Metformin & Wellbutrin no longer does that for me. I can eat tons and never get a stomach ache. Metformin no longer curbs my appetite, in fact, I have problems sitting still and am restless and find myself eating to keep my hands busy. This may be the Lexapro at work or perhaps it is time to have my Metformin increased since it has never been increased since 2006. Anyways, just thought I would share my story with you guys, hope it helps.
