What dosage of Topamax causes weightloss?

I just started Topamax.  I'm on 25mg/day and will increase by 25mg/week until I reach 100mg.  I heard the weightloss effect depends on the dose.  So, what dose did everyone here have their success?  And what type of diet/eating plan and exercise plan did you do to help it along?  I'm desperate to lose 40 lbs (half of which I gained on Zoloft-no longer taking).  PLEASE respond if you had any weightloss on this drug, I'm very curious.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!  :)

In terms of weight loss, it is different for everyone.  I take 200mg bid for epilepsy and it has not affected my appetite at all.  It does, however, affect the taste of pop.

As for Zoloft (sertraline), that had more of an affect on my appetite than the tomomax.  I am now on 150 mg hs (in the evening) and I find that it is far easier to control my appetite. So, I am not sure if it is the marriage of the zoloft and topomax or if it is just the zoloft.

Good luck to all.

I have to say that, everyone should of course share their experience, but keep in mind that everyone is different and react differently to everything. For me, the ONLY side effect I have even at 200mg a day is a bit of tingling in my fingers and toes, other than that, I feel fantastic, and I am actually on it for migraines, have not been on it for very long so I cant speak to the weight loss part, especially since I dont ever feel hungry anyway, for me its cravings. I did notice the pop thing, I thought it was weird, and didnt know that is what it was till I read this, I am not sure if my dr is going keep me on it since we have now gone to trying botox for my migraines. I have chiari one malformation, and so far all the different meds (indomethacin, sumatriptan+ibuprofen, fioricet and topamax) have failed, I have considered wanting to stay on it though since I have epilepsy and bi polar and obesity, then I could come off of my lamictal, since it does the job of all of those as well. All I am saying is that it doesnt hurt to try it, and if it works great if not, then dont use it, but you cant base your descision to not even try it based in fear of other peoples reactions to it, it is something you should talk to your dr about to see if they think it could help you.

I started on the name brand Topamax in 2007 for migraines. Within two months I was taking 100 mg which really helped curb the migraines. I went on the generic Topiramate a few years later when it became available, I still take it to this day. For years I noticed a lot of hair in the shower drain and on my hair brush. In 2007 I also began taking coral calcium and the excess hair loss stopped. I've noticed if I lay off taking the calcium for any length of time my hair starts to thin out. I take Coral Calcium Ultra with 75 trace minerals, vitamins, A, C, D, E, K, B2, B6, B12. I sound like I sell it but I don't, I just know that I feel better when I take it. Hope this helps :)

Just wanted to give my experience with Topomax from the summer of 2012.  I was hospitalized with severe clinical depression.  I am bi-polar.  I had been on every anti-depressant imaginable.  The family Dr. at Camh suggested Topomax for a few reasons.  I suffer awful neck pain, ears pulling neck choking face pulling down from elective midface and necklift I had done just over 3 years ago.  Some days it is just unbearable.  I had tried some serious narcotics such as morphine and oxycodone and neither of them  touched this kind of pain, which I believe to be nerve damage. Two of Toronto TOP Plastic Surgeons said what I was describing made no sense?  They had never heard of anything like this.  I had this surgery done at one of the top 10 hospitals in the world in Bangkok.  I researched and researched and even spoke to a woman here who used the Dr. I did.  After MUCh research online I have found others who suffer from this kind of pain I describe.  So the Dr at CAMH said Topomax is used as a mood stabilizer (although not one of the best, has no weight gain, as most do, (in fact weight loss) works as a sleep aid and so I was more then willing to try it.  My shrink at the hospital was unfamiliar with Topomaxbut put me on it with the MDs recommendation.  However the dosing was far too fast.  She had me up to 200 mg in 2 weeks. I was like a zombie.  So foggy, unable to form words, STUPID hence the nickname Dopomax,I did however notice my appetite completely went away as did my desire to smoke, after 40 odd years.  So I quit cold turkey.  So that was good.  But the confusion had me concerned.  So I came off it, a little slower then I went on it.  Skip ahead a year and I now have my own shrink putting me back on it 25 mg once a day for a fw weeks then to 50 mg for a few weeks and just now starting 100 mg.  I believe that is the dose where the "good side effects" come in (I did start smoking again when I went off it, but am adamant to stay smokefree and eat properly.  I believe with proper medical supervision this may be a very good drug for certain people.  If it helps with my neck pain that will be fabulous.  If I need to add lyrica or neurotin so be it.  I do not want to live with this kind of pain any longer.  I am 58 and this has been going on for over 3 years.  It is used mostly for migraines but off label for bipolar and pain.  Good luck to all.

I was put on Topamax combined with lamictal after having a grand mal seizure 7 yrs ago. I stopped the lamictal among all the other meds they had me on about 4 yrs ago but have continued the Topamax because of my bad migraines and I guess its kinda a security blanket for me. I take 200 mg at night but I have never lost weight on it, I still have headaches everyday just not as bad and my memory is horrible, at times I get so frustrated with myself! It ***** trying to study and people think I'm ditzy when I'm actually really intelligent!! i'm so used to the dose now, it doesn't even do anything, but I've not even checked to see how much more I could take because I don't know if I want to.  I don't understand people just taking this for weight loss!! Sorry, I have Colitis and and an autoimmune disease but I don't take meds for those. I would rather not take Topamax but i'm afraid to stop it, especially with what I do...even if I haven't had a seizure in 7 yrs. that was before Topamax.
