Extreme weight gain in a week

How is is possible to gain nearly 8 lbs in a week 3-22 #139.4 and 3-29 #146.6 when I have been keeping calories under 1500 and 5 trips to the gym burning about 400 calories each trip??? My measurements went from 29 inch waist to 31 and upper thighs increased between 1/2 and 3/4 inch.  What is going on and what can I do about it?  I don't beleive I've eaten anything with significant sodium.  I'm perplexed and getting very frustrated/depressed.  Help!

Thank-you for the response - I sure hope your right.  I seem to be a bit dizzy and chills right now so I skipped the gym for tonight.  I'm also trying to get back in the habit of drinking at least 64 ounces of water. I will take your suggestion and give it some time.  :-)  Thanks again.

This is water retention or possibly a medical condition.

The water retention is likely due to the exercise. Exercising, strength-training, those kinds of thing, can actually cause temporary weight gain. Your muscles need to repair themselves--and I don't have all the facts--but they may carry extra water during this time.

Don't panic just yet. Give it some time and maybe avoid those scales for awhile. (Fluid retention can also cause bloating around the body, so you would measure larger than before.)

It's not possible for you to actually gain weight unless you're pregnant or have something going wrong in the body.
