HELP!!

Hello!! Maybe some of you have gone through the same thing I have/am. So, after trying every diet from Weight Watchers, Zone, South Beach, various local diet clinics, Medifast, and then some.... I am still needing to loose 50 lbs. As a 58 yr. old woman, 5'4", 190 lbs., I am certainly feeling it in my knees and hips. Diagnosed as borderline "everything" -pre-diabetes, high-blood pressure, fybromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, metabolic disorder, etc. etc., and taking a ton of meds. I am very active but more in my head than my body. I have a great treadmill which I use sometimes and an indoor pool. What is the excuse? I am not sure??!! I am truly sick and tired of being sick and tired. I realize I use food to "medicate" as well because it is the one thing in my life I feel I can control. Yes, like many of you, I have a ton of stress that I do try to manage with yoga and meditation. Is there a good medical professional out there that can help me, please? Thanks so much for your consideration, guys!! :-)

I'm happy to hear that you've already discussed all this with your doctors so you know what things might be preventing you from losing --- that's a good thing.

And since you know about what to eat and exercise, then I guess motivation and encouragement would be the next things to concentrate on.

I still strongly suggest a food diary - either the one here on MedHelp or another one of your choosing.  It really does help keep things in perspective when it's all written down where you can see just what you actually ate.  Same goes with the exercise tracker.

Good luck and hope you'll stay with us.

Hi!

Wlcome to the community and thanks for posting.

Well..Losing weight is a seroius business and is not an easy one..

since you are on medication you should try to find out if any of the meds are actually preventing yuo losing weight and for the stress you are experiencing. Talking to your physician would be a good idea.

Once we determine the cause of not able to lose weight then we can go on to healthy plan and get you started on your weight loss journey.

Other than that eating healthy, exercising and most importantly staying motivated would be the key..

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask us!

Welcome to our forum.  I'm sorry to say if you want a medical professional to help you, you will have to post on the Expert Forums.  We are people just like you, who are struggling with our weight and trying to give one another support and encouragement, which is sometimes all it takes to come up with the incentive to get moving.

I'm like you -- I have high blood pressure, have hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, borderline insulin resistant, along with a bunch of other things and my medicine cabinet sees not shortage of meds either.

If you are taking a "ton of medicines" - you might first want to look at them as culprits for weight gain/inability to lose, as that's a side effect of a lot of meds.  If you have some that have that side effect, you  might ask your doctor if there are some alternatives you could try.  You also mention metabolic disorder -- that's a major biggy, as is the pre-diabetes, which is basically the same as insulin resistance.  In order to be able to lose weight, you will need to have those conditions under control, so again, a visit to your doctor might be in order.

Beyond that - we advocate losing weight via sensible diet (fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, no/low fat dairy, whole grains, "good" fats, et) and moderate exercise.  A healthy amount to lose is 1-2 pounds/week.  The first thing you would want to do is figure out your calorie needs, based on your height, weight, age and go from there.  Obviously once you figure out an amount of calories to maintain your current weight, you will then have to come up with a plan to create a deficit by either eating less or exercising more, in order to lose weight.

If you'd like some help figuring all this out, please don't hesitate to ask.  I would suggest that you start with the food diary here on MH -- I think that has a lot of the info you need.  Recording what you eat is very helpful because sometimes we just put food in our mouths without thinking about it, where if we have to write it down, we're more likely to stop.  The exercise tracker is also good -- that's another thing that's hard to keep track of unless we record it.  It's easy for me to think I exercised off 500 calories when I walked to the mailbox, but if I record that walk to the mailbox, I'll find that most likely it only cost me about 50 calories, if that ----

Anyway, I hope you'll decide to join us here and in the meantime, while you are mulling it over, you can send me your treadmill and indoor swimming pool --- I'd love to have a chance to try them out..................(just joking)

Again, welcome and I hope you'll stick around.....
