One More Try

Years ago I did Weight Watchers from the computer and lost 25 pounds.  A lot has happen since then.  My thyroid was removed, I have osteoarthritis in both knees and can't stand for more than 2 minutes or walk more than 3 minutes without a cane or a grocery cart to lean on, and I have a pool that I can't swim in because I can't kick.  I need to loose 45 pounds before the doctor will consider knee replacement.  I have no idea what to do and where to start. Any suggestions?

I know women who have done the point system on WW and didn't excercise at all and still lost weight. My mom is one of them!

The best thing can do is get back on the point system and if nothing else go to the store get a buggy and walk the store for as long as your back and knees will allow. This will at least get you up and moving.

Good luck and keep with us.

Welcome.

Are your thyroid levels balanced?  I have thyroid disease also and found it impossible to lose an ounce until my levels got balanced - was extremely discouraging. I pretty much gave up and have still not really gotten back on track yet.

PMoon had a good suggestion about using the point system from WW if you still have the books.  Or just make small changes in your diet - replace high calorie foods with low calorie alternatives (an apple instead of a chocolate bar; carrot sticks instead of chips, etc); watch your portion sizes and try keeping a food journal to help keep track of how much you are really eating and it will help keep you accountable.

Also since you have a pool, make it work for you.  Water exercise is excellent for both back and knee problems and doesn't require swimming or kicking.  My mother-in-law had both her knees replaced at the same time and by joining water aerobics and a "water based" arthritis class, within 6 weeks, she was running, riding a bike and able to walk fairly long distances and she was 70+ at the time.

Do a web search for "water exercises" and I think you will come up routines that you can do in the pool. Or talk to your doctor - maybe he has a water work out that he could give you.  Exercising in the pool will help you lose weight AND could help ease the pain in your back and knees at the same time.

Good luck.

Can you try some exercises laying down? Pilates maybe?

And I have WW books from years ago. Do you still have any information on points or anything? Maybe you don't have to rejoin, just try to follow the points again.

Good luck...........where there is a will, there is a way...
