Unexplained Weight Loss

Greetings to all from MedHelp! I am a 19 year old Chinese male who is who is concerned about his loss of weight without any apparent reason. I am 5'7" tall. For the past 4 years my weight has hovered around 132lbs but had risen to 137lbs after my recent vacation. I decided to lose some weight 2 weeks ago and started on a High Intensity Interval Training Program (HIIT). For 1.5 weeks I ran every day alternating between 3.6km runs (moderate intensity) and 2.4km runs (high intensity). 1.5 weeks later, I was back to 132lbs.

However, I very unfortunately came down with a bout of throat infection. I decided to wait it out since I had no fever but two days later, I experienced tightness in chest, was coughing green phlegm and ran a fever of 38.7 degrees. Do note that I have a habit of weighing myself daily and I was still 132lbs at this point of time. I decided I didn't want to wait it out and went to the doctor who game me Seratide (inhaler, supposed to be used twice a day for a week) and antibiotics (clarithomycin, twice a day for 10 days) Strangely/gladly enough, I was almost completely well after 1 day of taking medicine!

However, I am concerned because one day after I started taking the medicine I weighed 131 pounds and 2 days after I weighed 129 pounds! This is something I have never experienced before. I have had a considerable amount of experience with weight loss and even when I impose calorie restrictions to my diet and do HIIT every day, I normally only lose at most 4-5lbs in a week. However, I lost 4lbs in TWO days and this alarms me

Do note that I had a modest overdose of clarithomycin (Accidentally took 3 a day for 2 days). However, I had no diarrhea, and in my opinion I was eating more than when I was dieting 2 weeks ago.

Should I be worried that it is something serious? How should I be viewing this unexplained weight loss? Please help.

Hi there,
No this doesn't sound serious and I don't think you should be concerned. Most people lose weight when they are fighting a virus, whether it be from lack of appetite or fluid loss.
The best thing you can do is increase your caloric uptake (make sure they are healthy protein-rich foods and vegetables) and drinks plenty of fluids to kick your immune system and body strength back into gear. It might also be wise to take it easy on the exercise until you are back up to a weight you prefer.

All the best,
Brittany
