can't lose

I have always been at a decent weight but last year I finally went to a Endocrinologist and found out that the thyroid dosage was too high and it had basically shut down my thyroid along with having some nodules and told finally that my thyroid problem was Hashimotos.  The doctor started to put me on a diet plan which I adhered to and after 5 mos I had lost no weight.  I had several personal problems and was not able to return to that endo but on my own I have continued to adhere to a low glycemic index diet consuming less than 2000 cal per day and walk 2-3 miles daily.  I still cannot lose any weight and I really am beginning to think that I have a medical condition preventing me from weight loss, even 5 years ago when I switched to a low fat diet and increased my exercise I easily lost 30 lbs.  I am 51 yrs. old and cannot believe that 5 yrs older can prevent me from suddenly not being able to lose weight.  My last TSH check it was 2.58.  Is this too high, shouldn't it be closer to 1.00?  Thanks for any help on this issue.

Welcome to the WL&D community; we are Thrilled you are here!  Your diagnosis of Hashimoto's does affect your ability to lose weight, however, you are in very good company as there are other members who share your condition.  Barb is one of them and has a great wealth of information and experience to share.

I have to agree with her that perhaps 2,000 calories may be too many calories.  I do not have a thyroid condition but am unable to lose weight if I go higher than 1,400 to 1,500 calories a day.  I could do more if I implemented a greater exercise regimen .. and this is an area I am working on improving.

Truly hope you will stay involved here and share your journey with us.  In return, we will support your efforts and help provide motivation when yours slows.  Remember, we are stronger together than we are apart and YOU CAN DO THIS!

Take special care .. and do let us know how you are doing.

You don't give your height or weight.  Maybe 2000 calories/day is too much for you.  I'm only 5' tall and gained about 30 pounds because of my thyroid issues.  I've found it impossible to lose weight on 1200 calories or less/day and my job requires me to walk anywhere between 3 - 10 miles/day, plus other physical activity.

I have Hashimoto's also and I've been told that once my hormones are leveled out, I will be able to lose weight again.  Your TSH at 2.58 may be a bit too high, but my TSH is running about 0.05 and I've been told I'm actually hypER, but still not able to lose.

I'm waiting for someone to find that "magic" combination and in the meantime, I'm doing my best to follow a good eating plan and get plenty of exercise.  If I can't lose it, at least maybe I can keep from gaining any more and stay healthy.

I know I'm not a lot of help and it's very discouraging to try so hard and not be able to lose the weight.  All we can do is hang in there and keep trying.

Good luck and keep posting so we can all try to help each other.
