realistic goal???????

Hi to all! my name is karen and am new to this community.  I need to lose 84 lbs over a year and I want to know is that a realistic goal?? I am currently 224 lbs and 5' 6''.  I am reasonably healthy and have tried to lose weight before but find it hard as I have pcos, so any tips for losing weight would be extremely helpful!

well,

no meds at present.  I have been charting my cycle this month (ovulation) and will have to do so for the next 2 cycles and if no joy, the doc will put me on glucophage.  From reading here about it, it also helps to shift the weight!.  I plan on doing long walks and  low impact aerobics.  Have cysts so heavy gym equipment hurts!! Also I plan to start swimming again.

I plan to start on 2500 calories and end on 2000 calories.  I dont know if it is healthy to go below that.

I eat everything: fruit, meat, bread, sugary foods(my downfall), little bit of veg, butter, fish etc etc.  My biggest no no's are bread and sugary foods.
I drink a lot of full fat milk, fizzy drinks (every now and again), love orange juice, not so good on the water but will start to drink a lot more.

The journal idea is great! and will be looking into that also and the websites.

thanks again:)

Welcome.  Are you on any med for your pcos?  If so what?

What types of foods do you eat?  Do you have an exercise program?  If you can post a bit more info, we can get you started in no time.

Have you calculated the number of calories you need per day to maintain your current weight?  That's the first thing, then you have to create a deficit either by eating less or exercising (preferably both) in order to lose weight.  1 pound is = to 3500 calories, so in order to lose 1 pound per week, you would have to either consume 500 less calories per day OR do 500 calories of exercise per day.

A food journal is a great way to start.  You list everything you eat, along with the number of calories.  There are some great web sites that will help you calculate your calorie needs AND let you set up a food journal.  2 good ones are "spark people" and "live strong".

It would also be helpful to set up the weight and exercise trackers here on MedHelp to keep up with exactly how much exercise you are doing.

Ok - this is just for starters.  I just know some of the other members are going to chime in here with lots of good ideas too.

Good luck and stay with us.
