Artificial nails during pregnancy

I have artificial nails and paint my toenails. I heard from a friend that I am not supposed to be in a nail salon or paint my nails during pregnancy. I called my doctor to ask her today and she never called me back. I was planning to have the artificial nails removed after my sister's wedding at the end of March, but now I am worried that having them soaked off at a nail salon will be harmful to the baby. If I don't go to the salon, how will I get them off! I hope that this is not true but just wanted to know if anyone's doctor has told them that this is not safe. Please let me know! Thank you!

I was in my first month of pregnancy and i had fake nails on for 3 yrs I used a mask when they took them off also I went first thing when they opened in the morning so the fumes were not as strong but never went back till 7 months later to get a pedicure but in the morning again when the fumes are not in the air the chemical they use for fake nails are harmful to the baby expecially for the first trimester the chemical they use goes in the blood stream and can go to the baby no fake nails are safe. I never needed fake nails during pregnancy therfor they grew and were strong like crazy. Nothing is worth the baby's health we are still beautiful with out fake stuff !!!!

Easy way to get them off--let your nails grow, keep clipping off the ends, and eventually, the acrylic part will lose the adhesion, and you can clip it off with nail clippers.  After a few weeks of not getting them filled, the glue starts to break down...and you can pry the nail off.  No pain, no chemical, no fume...

I think as long as you dont stay in nail salon for several hours you will be fine.  When I go get my nails dont it takes about 30-45 mins with no wait so I would suggest going when there is no one there so you dont have to stay longer than you have to and breathe in the chemicals.  A mask would also be helpful.  The lady that does my nails just had a healthy baby boy and they whole time she was pregnant she wore a mask and worked everyday, 6 days a week.  I would think 30-45 mins every 3to4 weeks shouldnt be harmful, you probably are around 2nd hand smoke and toxins in the air more than that.  Plus its a great way to indulge yourself.....try painting your own toes when you are 9 months pregnant...lol.  There are plenty of pregnant women that get their nails and toes done when I go to get mine done.  Best of Luck to You! this is such a touchy subject for me and i tried not to respond because i dont want to come across as rude but i will try my best.

i have heard that you should not get nails done while pregnant due to inhaling all of the chemicals.

when i was pregnant i was paranoid about everything. i wouldnt eat certain foods, i wouldnt color my hair, clean w. certain chemicals and i didnt even paint my own nails in my house because i dint want to inhale the fumes from the polish.
while i may have gone overboard, there is enough research saying not to so why take the chance? it's not necessarily something that may/may not cause harm to the baby while pregnant, its down the road after he/she is born that i think about. learning disorders, add/adhd, memory issues, inability to stay focused, and so on.
it's like smoking many years back. you'd see moms smoking back in the day when no one knew the harmful effects. well, through research, we now know what it can do. now, they even say to avoid second hand smoke pregnant or not. maybe the baby turns out fine, or low birth weight but again, what about later on? that's how i think when it comes to stuff like you are asking about. you just never know so why take the chance?

i wonder if you called the nail salon and asked how you could take them off yourself? (well ventalated area). i am sure they would let you know without having to come in.
if you have to go in, then wearing a mask is a good idea but i would make that the last time until after the baby is born.
good luck to you and i think its great you cared enough about your pregnancy to ask and didnt just go in.

I wore fake nails while I was pregnant with my last child. I have never heard anything about that. I didn't have any problems other then the normal morning sickness.  But if you are worried it is your choice and you have to do what you think is best for your baby.

I am pretty experienced with nails...I have seen a LOT of ladies get their nails done and my nail tech is pregnant with her 2nd baby...you can soak off the nails at home with a little acetone dipped cotton balls...just put a little ball on each nail then wrap aluminum foil around the nail(this speeds up the process) then gently file off the nail product it also helps the cut the nail as short as possible before soaking. This way you don't have to go to the salon at all. THis procedure is what they will do at the salon but you can do it right at your own home..and wearing as mask would be a good idea too. Its a  personal choice I have never heard of an issue with getting your artifical nails done while pregnant but if you are worried then wait til after baby to get them back on.
