Breast tissue in underarm

I have a lump on my underarm.  It is not painful but it is ugly and it makes me very self conscious.  When I got pregnant it really got big and filled with milk my doctor said it was breaast tissue that traveled into my armpit and that as long as it didn't hurt it really wasn't anything to worry about.  It just looks like extra baggy skin and as a result I can't wear sleeveless tops.  I've never known anyone else who has this to ask what they think or feel.  My husband thinks if it bothers me so much I shyould have it removed.  I am scared and want to know what the health risks are.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Shat should I do about it?

Hello!

I am just wondering if anyone here in the US would mind sharing their surgeons contact information with me. With so many choices I'm not sure who to go with for my own surgery. I live in NY so obviously the closer the better, but if there is a really good surgeon that someone recommends I would be willing to travel. Thanks!! :)

I had my surgery last Friday, August 19th. I've started an album on flickr to track my progress - http://www.flickr.com/photos/rsrobbins/sets/72157627356194919
Need to add an updated set of pics later today, Day 7.

I was in and out of the surgeon's office in around 2 1/2 hours. I took Percocet the day of the surgery and then Tylenol the two following days. I've been back at the gym (in a less strenuous manner) since the Sunday following my operation. I have some soreness, but I haven't had any serious pain since the day of surgery.

The swelling I still have actually makes it look like I still have the masses, but I'm cautiously optimistic that it will go away at some point.

I had ABT removal surgery approx 13 years ago. The surgeon was a breast cancer expert and I have always wondered if my poor results were that he lacked cosmetic experience.  However at the time I was unable to find a doctor who knew much about the condition and a cosmetic surgeon referred me to the cancer expert. I am in Australia.

If anything my extra boobs are the same size as before but now are slightly pointed with scars.  I also have numbness in one arm from the back of the armpit toward the elbow. It was easily the most painful thing that I have ever experienced. I had drains in for 5 days and had fluid extracted twice a week for 5 weeks after the drains were removed.

It cost me $3800 out of pocket. And I was a mess for a good 3 weeks before I got real movement back or pain free moments.

Call me crazy but I would still have a go at having them removed properly if I believed it was possible to see results.  I am so happy for some of you girls that are happy with your results.

At the time of surgery I was 60kg 172cm tall.  I was told to lose weight by a couple of doctors to see if that would help.  I went to 52kg and it made no difference to the underarm tissue.

Good luck to all of you having a go at removing these embarrassing bits.  It is nice to know that I am not alone in the world!

Hi I have been lurking on this board for a couple of years off and on.  I am 37 and had breast tissue under my arms since the birth of my second child who is now 15.  I had my quick outpatient surgery on August 9 and I am 4 days post op.  So far I am happy with the surgery although like others the swelling has me questioning if they left some tissue.  My insurance did cover the surgery with a surgeon not a plastic surgeon. I was physically ill with nausea, vomiting, lightheaded and dizziness for the first two days after the surgery.  Not sure why but followed the nurses orders and I'm 90% better.  For now I am still sore it is hard to drive as much as I'm use to driving (I have four kids).  I can't easily extend my arms without some discomfort.  I'm bruised pretty bad and the scar looks horrible but I'm hopeful.

I am grateful for this site because I know I'm not alone and it gave me the courage to pursue this that I have been living with for 15 years.  Hopefully I can post more on my healing as I continue.

Finally made an appointment with a Breast Surgeon and have decided to schedule the surgery.  She says that besides the cosmetic issues and the pain issue of having a lump under your arm--her real concern is that mammograms can not accurately image the underarm area.  With the amount of breast tissue under my right arm (size of a lime) the risk of undetected lumps can be a real issue.  The only thing I have not decided on is whether to do another procedure on my left arm--I had surgery on that underarm as a teenager, but a small amount has migrated back though not really in the armpit area but rather further down.  The surgeon tells me that a mammogram would be able to image the area under my left arm--so it is really up to me.  Wondering about the recovery time for those posters who have had bilateral removal.  My surgeon says she would most like insert drains and that she does not believe the recovery would be any worse for bilateral removal vs single removal.  My thought is that I would take a week off work and then work from home for another week.  Am also considering getting laser hair removal on my underarms prior to surgery as I recall not being able to shave under my arm for a period of time when I had my last surgery and thought this might help.  Wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions.
