Brown discharge during and after depo provera

You guys have been a lot of help so I hope you can help me!  I started Depo Provera back in October of 2006 and have only received one of the 3 month dose.  I got the shot when I was on my period.  My period used to last 3 days then go away completely.  A few days later, I would have a brownish discharge for just a few hours.  I was told this is normal since your body is getting rid of some of the old blood and tissue.  Well, after Depo, I bled the entire three months.  For the most part it was red but there was a lot of brownish at the end of the 3 months.  I didn't even want to have sex and had horrible mood swings and my face broke out.  After the 3 months, I had sex (still having discharge at the time) with no problems at all.  Suddenly, all the discharge cleared up and things were normal for about two weeks.  Since then and at the present, I continue to have a brownish discharge.  It clears up a bit from time to time but always returns.  In the past few days, I have had some discomfort in my abdomen and felt odd.  I took a pregnancy test since it was an obvious concern.  It has been 3 months since I had sex and the test showed up negative (store bought test).  I'm just wondering if anyone thinks I should go to the doctor or if this is a fairly normal behavior.  Thanks ahead of time!

It's been about 12 1/2 years since I had one shot of depo. I discontinued it because I was one of the few that have bleeding the entire time on it. My dr said that it may eventually stop with another shot, but I didn't have any nerves left, so I said no. I now have a period every two weeks for the past 7 years. No one can figure out why, but I think that my hormones are way out of balance because of the depo. The brownish blood is just the old blood or the blood that is slow getting out due to low flow/tapering at the end of a period. I think that your hormones are a bit off balanced as well, but if you've had unprotected sex after the 3 months were up, it is always a possibility that you could be pregnant. Give your dr a call and voice your concerns, they can do a quick blood test to tell for sure if you are pregnant or not. Best of luck to you.  tmv

I started Depo Mid May before my peroid for that month, and my peroid didnt come. At the start of June I started to get my period and it lasted with heavy flow for a solid week and a half.  To this day im getting slight cramping pain around my left ovary and spotting with brown discharge. I love the idea of not having to take the pill everyday but I have read so many cons about this shot Im thinking about not going back for the 2nd shot in July.  It's mid June now and the cramping has subsided but Im still getting spotting and brown discharge, my sex drive is down, and I tend to feel moody/depressed more.  I know this shot effects everyone in a different way which is why I was willing to give it a shot.  But if you are thinking about starting this birth control really do your homework.

I have been going through the exact same thing. I got my depo shot a week after my period and I have now been spotting for three weeks. I dont know what the heck is going on and its getting very annoying. My sex life has completely gone down hill with my partner because of the brown spotting. I have slight cramps, back aches, and nausea. Can anybody tell me whats going on? I have called planned parenthood and they seem to not have any idea whats wrong

I'm young. (too young to let you know.) I'm having this brown discharge and its been happening for about 2 or 3 weeks now and I'm very scared. I started taking the depo shot in january and I'm due for another next week. I was scared that I could be pregnant but I couldn't see how. We used protection. (my birthcontrol plus a condom) A week after, I've been feeling sick everytime I eat, my lower back hurts, and I'm always tired. Can anyone help me?.

I got the depo shot about 5 months ago. I was fine for the first month but that very first period that i got seemed to neverrr stop! i must of had my period solid for about a month and even after that i would just start bleeding randomly. And if i wasn't bleeding i usually had this brown discharge stuff. nasty. So i decided not to get my second depo shot. That was about two months ago and to this day I still have brown discharge and really out of wack periods. All i can tell you is DO NOT get the depo shot! so not worth it

I have had 2 shots so far of depo. Right after the shot my period got lighter which is normal then it turned into brown sticky discharge. which is disgusting and is affecting my sex life. i get the brown discharge for a long time goes away comes back soon after. IDK why this is going on but i wish i never started the shot. Also after sex my vagina area will burn and eventually goes away the next day. Does anyone else get this? im just wondering if it is from the depo as well. My obgyn gave me yeast infection pills to take but those didnt seem to work.
help please ?!

I've been on depo twice the first time I tried it I sounded like all of you. Stopped it for 2 years I was completely normal after stopping it. I had my daughter and now back on depo. I almost never bleed the only time I bleed is when its a week before I'm supposed to get the shot.  Also they say you can get the shot 1 week before your supposed to so you avoid bleeding which works for me as soon as I get it I stop... Guess everyones different... I wonder why it worked this time and not the last... But hey no complaints I bleed 2-3 days every 3 months I like that :)

I've been on depo since Sept.2008....the doc said the bleedin was spose to stop after the 1st 3 months but it didnt. I was spottin on and off for the 1st year and a half. So i decided to skip a couple shots and get back on. Since I've been back gettin my shots I've had no bleeding at all. Sometimes the brown spottin would come and go often. Idk what its about but I haven't seen it in the past week so now I think everything is ok. If it comes back again I'm goin to ask my doc what is goin on.

you know i've been having the same problem. i took my 1st shot 3 months ago and for the 1st month everything was fine until in the middle of the 2nd month i started to bleed for 2weeks then it stopped for 2 weeks and i thought it was over but then i started bleeding AGAIN! this time it went on for almost 3 weeks. i called the planned parenthood and they told me that everyone's body reacts differently but i would talk to your doctor like now or before you plan on taking the shot again. i wish you luck and hopefully this will stop for both of us =]

the brown discharge is just residual uterine lining. Because the Depo is causing your menus to become irregular, the lining has to still shed. in some cases, it has been more then 28 since you last shed the lining, so the it looks brown, just like the end of your period.
If you were having a miscarriage, you would have severe uterine spasms/pain, the blood would be red-bright red, not brown. The reason the discharge starts following sexual intercourse is because while having sex, if your partner is bumping into your cervix, this can cause trauma to the uterus, and can cause some of the lining to shed. also if you are achieving orgasm, this causes your uterus to contract, and can cause some bloody discharge also.
If you have had unprotected sex while on Depo, and are concerned about an STD, you should get checked. You should get checked after every sexual partner, and intermittently during an ongoing relationship, as some STDs might not show up unless you are having an outbreak.
I was on Depo from age 16-23. The most important thing to remember about Depo, is that you need to take a calcium supplement while on it. The side effects from Depo are the same side affects you will experience from any birth control. Just make an informed decision.

My suggestion to everyone is not to get the depo shot. I have recently had the same problem and this can last up to a year. My doctor told me that it is because your body is not used to not having it whether or not you only had one shot. It takes about a year to get your regular cycle back. YUCK! I know I got mine in January and it ended in April and every since ive had the brown discharge which is a period unfortunately...

omg you must read my words people!!! do not get the depo!!! I have had 2 shots now, and now have ovarian cysts, brown discharge that has been going on for 2 weeks, I hit rock bottom depressed, and I am acting suicidal and crazy, and feel very sick. My doctor said that the hormone in depo may be not what my body is accepting... and could be hurting my body!!!! i am not going in again for another depo. EVER i have never been depressed in my life. This horrible shot caused all this pain for me.

My first depo shot was fine... had my period the first month, then I didn't get it for the remaining two months. I went back for my second shot, got my period a week later and it STAYED for the next 3.5 MTHS! My doctor told me to go ahead with the 3rd shot my period would go away, THANKFULLY I did not listen to him, and decided to go off Depo. Problem is, my depo ran out May 22 - it is now July 3rd and I haven't gotten a period? We've used protection the entire time - so I don't see how I could be pregnant - but I'm just concerned how this shot might have really messed up my system. I have always been great with my periods - every 28 days on the dot... so this is very frustrating. I also am experiencing random spotting every other day or so? (Sometimes pink, sometimes brown) I naturally think its my period starting - but then the spot goes away. Not sure whether I should see the doctor about this or not? I don't think theres anything he could do for me? Very frustrating! I wish I had NEVER taken that stupid shot... I also gained weight, experienced depression and hairloss.

I've been on Depo for about a year and a half and have been very happy with it. Little to no spotting, no noticable mood swings, and a regular sex drive. Only complaint I have is that about a year after starting depo, I gained about 15 lbs within a month or so. Doctor said it could be cause of the shot, or just bad habits (eating too much not exercising enough). I've lost 5 of the 15 now and there's not a noticeable difference either way. I recently (yesterday) started spotting again which I haven't in a while (probably 6+months). It's brownish/red and a pretty decent flow. We'll see how long it lasts. If it seems to be a problem I'll comment again, otherwise it usually just lasts about 3-5 days. Overall, I have yet to want to go off the shot and I'm pretty happy with it.

When I was a teenager (I am 26 now) and was on depo, I used to go weeks or months at a time with a period.... Because everyones body is different, there are different combinations of side effects for everyone!! And if my husband looked at me and said "eeeewwwww" about something that I had no control over, he would be sleeping on the dang couch!! You have no control over what is going on and he should be supportive, not saying that!!

I am 20 I have been on the depo for almost 3 years since I was 18 and the only problems I had when I first started it was really bad hot flashes and sore beasts but I thought that was jut due to the cysts I have in them. I just took my self off of it in april and never went in for my last shot and I have not had any intercourse since then and for about a month after i got off of it i was bleeding then after it stopped i got this nasty brown discharge and it hasn't stopped i have been to the doctor for pain Im my stomach and they did tests and couldn't find anything wrong with my ovaries said everything was fine. And they did an std test and everything came back normal why won't this disgusting discharge go away. Its quite annoying my fiance comes home In about 2 months and i would love for it to be gone.
