Can't find IUD strings?

I got the Skyla IUD (smallest one) two days ago, and I'm still on my period so I should be able to feel the strings. I pushed my finger In a few inches up and cannot find anything.
Granted, I'm too scared to push things inside my vagina, but I can't check the strings. The IUD is not lost (yet) because I've only had it for two days. What should I do?
