What to eat during pregnancy

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. I am pregnant for the third time in my life, but my last two were years ago. During my first two pregnancies I lost weight because I could not eat anything! So whatever I could keep down, I was happy with.

Well, with this pregnancy I feel sick all the time, but I don't actually get sick. That is the happy note. The problem is that nothing taste good! I find myself only being able to eat a few items that taste okay - not good - just okay. They are lunch meat chicken/turkey, fruit, cheese and veggies. Tea actually takes my sick stomach away. I can handle about two cups of milk a day. Water I can only drink warm. Not cold at all and I can't drink that much. Not bad, but ....

I went online to find out what to stay away from during pregnancy. Deli meats, cheese and tea were all on the list! I don't drink tea with caffine in it, but I do drink green tea shipped from China. They are tea bags and I make the tea at home myself. I saw that some tea had herbs that you can't have. Well, so now what? Is deli meat really bad for the baby? Can you drink green tea? What tea is allowed? Does anyone know what brand? I don't care about the cost, I just want my tea so that I can actually eat other things.

I know what you mean about food not tasting the same.  Last night when i got home from work I had a bowl of Cinnamin Toast Crunch. They tasted funny, I don't think I want to eat them anymore.  I have also noticed that I nearly choked on my Syliva like three times today,  I don't remember this with my first.  Just goes to show that no two pregnancy's are alike.

Cheese is fine as long as it is from pasteurized milk.  This is the law in the U.S., just look at the label and if it was made from milk that was pasteurized and/or made in the U.S., you can eat it.  Soft cheese made in Europe, such as genuine Roquefort or Brie, is not considered safe across the board because there, it is permissible to make it from unpasteurized milk, which can contain undesirable bacteria (doesn't make you sick but can hurt the baby).  If you eat cheese made here, even if it is soft, you are safe.

To avoid the listeria risk, always keep your deli meats really fresh, and cook them for a few minutes, or microwave them briefly, to kill any surface bacteria before you eat them.

I also recommend ginger snaps.  I didn't love them before I was pregnant, but boy did they help the heartburn.  Ginger tea too.

Good luck!!!

I never kept up with what to eat/ not to eat. I just ate what tasted good. i was able to eat, but got a little icky feelin at night. Just keep tryin to eat what ya can. I really don't see whare tea would hurt you. I drank it the whole time I ws pg. I live in the south so, it's a staple here. I'd die without it. i don't drik sasafras (sp) tea though. I have heard it can be bad for ya in large amounts.Good luck!

I would ask your Dr., some teas are okay, I think you are supposed to stay away from green tea and best to go with decaf, but I would just ask the nurse.  I know that soft cheese is bad, but a lot of the stuff you find at the grocery store is okay.  Deli meat they just suggest cooking first if you eat it.  I know what you mean about nothing tasting good.  I'm just now getting to the point where I can enjoy eating, but I'll be 25 weeks tomorrow and have yet to put back all of the weight I lost due to morning sickness, let alone any more.  (I have put on 3 lbs. though, yay.)  At least you can eat fruit, maybe try to sneak in some veggies, but stick to what you can eat.  I have been on a salad kick and put some chicken breast in there too.  Good luck!
