I got the IUD 8 months ago and YES it can make you gain weight if it is the Merina one.  It is the estrogen in it that makes you gain weight.  I gained 25 lbs after I got and I work out 5 times a week, so I know it's not lack of exercise.  I just recently got it taken out and I have already dropped 5lbs.  I had another friend that had it for 2 years and she gained weight on it as well.  She got hers taken out 2 months ago and has dropped 15lbs.  So to answer your qestion YES it can make you gain weight, the copper one (I don't remember what the name for it is) would NOT make you gain weight though, from what my doctor told me.

An IUD does not make you gain weight, unless accompanied by lifestyle changes such as not exercising because you're nervous about having an IUD.
