Can you be pregnant, and have a period?

jm8
I was wondering if someone can be pregnant, even though they get a period. I herd of these cases. But are they true?

I have a girlfriend who bled early on during her pregnancy, she didn't know at the time she was pregnant and just thought it was a period.
